Seller provided a tracking number that didn’t match up with what they told me.

Okay, so I purchased a item that was almost $600. The seller seemed friendly and seemed to know what they were doing.

They told me they would be shipping the item out on Jan. 22nd with priority mail which would likely reach me on the 23-24. I haven’t received anything yet.

But I’m a little weary because the tracking they provided shows that it was shipped on the 18th and then delivered to the community mail box on the 20th.

I’ve messaged the seller but have yet to get a response.
Am I freaking out too early? Is this a scam? Since they provided a tracking number am I screwed out of buyer protection??

Help?!

Update:

I was able to talk with a customer service person at Canada Post. They have opened a service ticket and have advised me they will look into it and to wait 3 days. They were only able to tell me that the postal code matches but nothing else.

What does the postal code match?

Your own? The address the parcel was delivered to?
You may have to go door to door asking your neighbours if they received your parcel and were unsure how to correct the problem.

Wear a mask. Go during daylight hours.

Re: Seller provided a tracking number that didn’t match up with what they told me.

The postal code of the tracking and my own match. I asked if they could confirm if my address was the same as the tracking address. They said they could only provide that the postal code matches. I’m assuming I need to go to an actual post office this week to get any further.

As for neighbours, they haven’t seen anything. I’ve talked to a few in person and posted on a local community page. I even asked the man up on an adjacent street who shares my house number, as he has received one of my packages before. Nothing...

The last time I checked a signature was not required unless the package and shipped were C$850+. Has something changed?

Current threshold for dot ca/dot com and dot au is 750.00. Thresholds for other countries attached. Not sure if any requirements has been officially changed due to Covid. (The list does not specify the currency.) Another place where dating the help files could be useful.

Most likely this was cut and pasted from dot com.

I’ve received other things during this lockdown that were pricy and no signature was ever required. They’d just drop it at my door and run, one of them didn’t even knock.

We've been told by eBay (@tyler@ebay) that if the carrier has affirmed that the delivery was made, they will accept that without an actual Signature. This is more reassuring for sellers than for buyers.

Can you be at your community mailbox Monday when the Postie is delivering mail? He/She might remember it. Maybe he/she put it in the parcel pick-up box and forgot to put the key for it in your mailbox.
Just a thought.

Really defeats the purpose of paying for a signature and the driver not being required to ask for one. I received an order recently dropped off on front step from UPS. Tracking shows as delivered and signed for in person. Only problem was right house number, wrong street and no one knocked on door. I advised UPS to make a pick up to correct. Waited 2 days and no one showed. Called intended receiver and they came by a picked up personally. No one showed up from UPS after. Scanning details can be manually updated by driver and very often are. I have also seen situations where tracking states as delivered to community mail box only to show up later that day or the next day.

Can you possibly look into this or have it flagged for review? This is one of those oddball situations that I am worried op may not be able to navigate solo. Thanks

Unfortunately, this isn’t an option. The window that they come is too broad to wait the whole time. If they came during the same hour everyday it would be possible, but this isn’t the case.

Another UPDATE:

I was lucky and unlucky this morning.
The man who delivers my post stayed to talk with me after delivering something for my husband. He says he hasn’t seen my package and never picked up anything that big for me. (It would have been in a bigger box)

For now I’m going to submit an INR because the seller hasn’t responded.

Only problem was right house number, wrong street and no one knocked on door.

I got a bicycle that way once. Also UPS.

Carefully hidden from street view behind my backyard fence.

I delivered it to the student who wanted to use it to commute to Carleton U.

I have also seen situations where tracking states as delivered to community mail box only to show up later that day or the next day.

I think some carriers mark everything Delivered in the truck at the start of the day, not on delivery.

It is $850 Canadian for Paypal claimsl.  I had forgotten that ebay and PP had 2 different numbers.

They have been known to do that from time to time...Trying to cheat the system but they can get written up for doing that. The post office has been known to do random spot checks. Part of quality control and training.

Heard another story the other day. Person waiting for a package that had been marked deliver to back door. They got an alert that it was delivered. They looked around and check with neighbour. No luck. Found it 2 days later. It had been tossed to the upstairs front deck and was covered in snow. When packages include specific instructions it needs to be marked on the box in marker. Not only on the label. The drivers do not read the labels as standard practice.

If this is going to be common practice for the foreseeable future (signature specified) drivers not attempting then maybe eBay needs to come up with something to address this so everyone is protected.

If we can trust tyler@ebay,   then eBay is willing to take the driver/carrier's word that the package really was delivered.

Which is good for sellers.

For buyers?

I think any buyer who normally purchases items of value (which might be over $20 for one person and over $500 for another, never mind the Dispute minimums), it would be wise to set up a Flex Delivery account with Canada Post.

This is apparently *F*R*E*E* and means any parcels (etc?) will be held at the local PO and only a delivery slip left by the carrier.

Has anyone used this service yet? Is it for all packages or is it a one-off?

Thanks for mentioning this. I just signed myself up. And hopefully this helps avoid extra headaches in the future.

Edit: When I signed up it said you would have to have your package or mail addressed to that certain post offices PO Box. So, it’s not all mail, only packages you’ve give the PO Box address for.

I've used Flex in the past from a company I buy supplies from in Montreal when they shipped with Canadapost. Anything that would be too large for the community mailbox. Worked like a charm. Alternate plan would be to sign up for it if you wanted everything you ordered hold for pick up.

Now those Mtl parcels come Fedex Ground to the house so no option to use Flex Delivery.  Usually arrives in 4 to 5 days and am advised when it's out for delivery so I can keep an eye out for it. Sometimes he rings door bell....Most of the time, not.
