How can I add above the default $100 insurance for ebay shipping label (UPS)?

Under Package protection I I cannot add "Additional liability coverage"   because it is  greyed out

I know that with CP labels you can definitely select the extra coverage payment, after you choose the shipping label.

Can't help you with UPS, as I've only used them once for an eBay order, and that was before the Orange Menace era.

With eBay labels you are limited for added insurance based on what an item sold for. With CP (0utside of eBay) and couriers, at your discretion you can include more insurance. No guarantees you could get paid out for the difference without very good proof of the items true value.  As an example if the item sold for 165 with eBay labels you could purchase the additional 100 but would only be covered/pay for for the 65.00. I discovered this early on using eBay labels. (That could be the reason you are seeing additional insurance as greyed out.) Note: Additional 100(s) of insurance is VERY expensive compared to CP.

If you click on the insurance tab icon at bottom of label creation you will something similar to this.

Your parcel will already be protected up to 39.50 by the coverage included in Canada Post Expedited Parcel.

As an fyi in the olden days with manual courier bills you filled in the free 100 as an automatic procedure. If you forgot to you were only covered for 2.00 per lb.

When I need additional insurance for a package, I usually use U-PIC.

Item sold for $500 USD (cost me nothing)

I may just take the chance with $100 coverage since the odds of damage/missing are very slim

has any body heard of anyone getting any insurance payout from c.p. with the 100 dollars insurance coverage - i have two that are out standing for over 18 months  so i won't use any insurance that is issured by canada post third party insurance seems to be the way to go. hopefully they are more honest  extra insurance for anything is a waste of money with cp post, as far as my experience is concerned .

When I worked at a PO (a long time ago) I had a few customers that filed claims and got money (for the value they could prove the item was worth). They were regulars and packed their stuff at the PO so I said I'd vouch for them on what they were sending ($25 CDs and stuff like that). They got their pay out.

I've received a few payouts on lost registered mail (back when you could send goods internationally in RM), they paid the maximum coverage on my under insured items without requiring proof (in the case of the one payout, the mail bag had items stolen at Pearson and when it got to Poland they rejected the whole bag of mail, CP tried to hide that but my buyer in Poland provided proof of what happened and CP paid out in a hurry becuase I made a stink).

I've also received a couple payouts on Xpresspost with the $100 in insurance, but I believe it was just the shipping that they paid out on.

I have a few times, including on items shipped with eBay labels. I also had one denied (don't know why).

What do you think extra insurance will protect you from?

Not eBay claims.

Item Not Received claims are refuted by the tracking number.

Not As Described claims are ended by requesting return and refunding on arrival.

Not damage in transit.

Almost every shipper will go to "poor packaging" as an excuse for damage.

If the value of the shipment is over $750, Signature Confirmation refutes INR claims.

Have you had many (any) claims that paying more for delivery will obviate?

I do occasionally add Signature Confirmation as a cheap way to remind the recipient that the parcel was not left on the stoop for porch pirates, even when eBay does not require it.

One reason we have Expedited is that back at the turn of the millennium we could make claims on untracked Small Packets very easily.

And the ladies on the phone in New Brunswick were lovely to deal with.

But I guess too many possibly unfounded claims were made and barcodes became the norm.
