Buyer Begs for Feedback

I sold a jersey to a buyer earlier this month.  He left positive feedback, then a couple days later sent a message stating he was unhappy because it didn't fit him.  The jersey still had tags and was marked XL; appeared to be XL as well.  Buyer stated it fit more like a medium.  I replied that I didn't make the jersey, I just sell it as it is.  He didn't ask to return the item.  I have no idea what the buyer looks like, so I can't comment on the fit.

 

Now he has sent 2 separate emails begging for feedback.  Normally I leave feedback once buyers have left theirs.  But this seems a little needy and therefore suspicious....what do you think?

FB is purely voluntary.

 

Why would a buyer "need" FB?

At most he can leave a Response to his own or your feedback. While these are relatively prominent on the page, they do not affect your FB %.

Any idea what he did with your DSRs? That is more important, but again, if he left FB already he can't change them.

 

I see that in addition to size, you also give measurements. So you are covered even there.

 

I'd add him to my Blocked Bidder List.

 

I suspect he was fishing for a partial refund.

If you are comfortable with it, you could respond: I'm sorry the jersey does not fit, although the measurements are in the listing. You can return the jersey for a full refund.

 

But just leaving your own FB won't change the positive he left.

On a less calm note, I would have an urge to pickup a measuring tape next time I went to IKEA for the Meatball Special and mail it to him, with no further comment.

I think you should be leaving feedback as soon as a buyer pays for an item and you have shipped. That ends the obligation of a buyer to you.. Holding out to leave a buyer feedback puts off many buyers and is not something you want to overlook if you wish to retain buyers for repeat business. For the small percentage of transactions you will have where you may regret leaving positive feedback it is isn't worth annoying other customers. It's important to a percentage of buyers, as to why it isn't really important to know other than it is something they value.

I don't see anything overtly suspicious about requesting feedback. The buyer could force a return for any number of reasons (there is no such thing as as is, final sale, etc on ebay) without having to manipulate you into leaving them feedback.

If this was the Detroit baseball shirt-- I notice you did not include measurements.

 

As someone who is currently wearing items of clothing marked with three different sizes all of which fit just fine, believe me, measurements beat manufacturer's marked sizes every time.

Especially true in women's clothing, where the size reduces as the price rises.

The Mrs bought me a size "M" shirt made in Bangledesh. It missed meeting in the middle by a considerable margin. I have some "S" shirts that leave me with ample room to enjoy extra supper.

 

What the tag says does not mean anything.

I would give him the feedback too. If you are not sure, you could offer a return first and see what is his answer.

Most likely he left the positive when the parcel first arrived and it looked so lovely and perfect.  Later, when he tried 

to wear it, he found it was too tight.  

 

Tags are of no use in a listing other than to prove that the item is new, or what the fibre content is.  You must include 

measurements.  

 

At this point you can always ask the buyer if he would like to return the item.  If he agrees, tell him to return it with the 

reason that it does not fit.  Be nice, -- you have no cause to be otherwise.

 

If a buyer returns an item because it does not fit he is responsible for return shipping.  In a situation like this it makes no

sense to issue a partial refund because no amount of money will enlarge the shirt.  Partial refunds are good in cases 

where there is a small amount of damage, like a stain on the sleeve not mentioned in the listing.  

Or maybe you just don't want the shirt back and a bob or two off the item price is better than having to issue a full refund 

on return.

 

I haven't seen the emails so I don't know what "begging for feedback" looks like, but perhaps he does not know you are

unable to leave him a negative.  It should not be too difficult to find something pleasant to tell him, such as you sometimes

leave it in batches and just haven't got round to it, or it slipped your mind, or you were waiting to see if he wanted to return

the shirt because you leave feedback as a final conclusion to a completely ended transaction.

 

In what you have described here I see nothing at all untoward on the part of the buyer.
