Shipping alternatives?

I like many others am not happy with Canada Post. My solution was to drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls once a week and ship with USPS. Everything was fine until US customs told me I needed to get an import license and go through the truck lines! It was worth the drive up until then as my shipping costs were half and delivery times faster. Now I'm looking for a broker or shipping company that will take my packages from Toronto and deliver them to the closest USPS location. Any suggestions?

Cheers Glen

You don't need a license but you do need to go through the commercial, often called truck, lanes and do the proper paperwork. Only Lewiston & Fort Erie have the commercial lanes. You can't cross at Rainbow with commercial goods.

It's pretty easy but depends on the dollar value of the shipment you're bringing over. If the total is under $2000 it's pretty simple. If it's over $2000 you do need to have a broker & becomes a bit more complicated.

wow... is it really worth to send your packages by some shipping company to USPS outlet? I never thought about it... I'm in Ottawa- 2 hours to the border...

For me shipping within Canada is more expensive than to Japan and sometimes it takes 3 weeks from Ottawa to Toronto 😞 is it cheaper to send parcel from US to Canada? But since 90% of my customers are from the States this would work for me... how you do with the return address?

If you find the solution... could you please share??? :-x

Canada post is good . Your just gonna get in trouble or high fees trying to ship usps .

I used to think canada post sucked but lost packages are the best Broken packages are better and if you have time on your hands slow packages can make money too .

I love it when cpc loses my package its like 2 sales in 1 and when they break stuff oh its like christmas 10 times a month . I get the broken item back for free (as long as its under 200.00 i can just resell it and make some money) and they cover the total cost of the broken item just have to fax them a little paper work .

I got a 25% discount with contract which i will be upping next year to about 31% with my current volume of 250+ packages a week .

I used to try and do the whole take to usa and ship thing too but all it does after awhile is get you flagged by customs and they will say you are running a buissness in usa ect just a bunch of headachs .

There is no way around it you have to ship your stuff in canada and canada post is the cheapest method . Only negitive is there slow but they do have ship guarantees that if they dont deliver by a certain date you can reclaim your money .

That's why you have to go in the commercial lanes. You are running a business when you bring commercial/sold goods into the US. Businesses can't use the personal lanes when they're bringing over commercial goods. And as I already said, you have to have the proper paperwork and Tariff codes for what you are bringing over.

I've been a bit busy but for those who would like to take there stuff across the border and ship with USPS have a look at http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/home.xml and http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/toolbox/publications/trade/iius.ctt/iius.pdf

I'm still looking for a broker/shipper that will pick up in Toronto and drop my stuff at a USPS outlet in Niagara Falls.

On a bit of another note I used to use canpar religiously. I liked them a lot till they lost a package going to a residential address. I found out the hard way that there insurance that I paid extra for was only going to be a $1 a pound and not the $300 value of the package. The insurance only covers packages shipped to commercial addresses. So long story short my package weighed 20lb canpar sent me a cheque for $20 😞 This was four years ago so things might have changed

To cross you need to fill out the 7523 with the proper tariff codes & country of origin & whatever else is on the form. Country of origin is where the item is manufactured not where you bought it. Some things also require extra documentation before being allowed entry. It depends on the item as to what else is needed or if it's allowed at all. Research before you go.

Some items just lend themselves to extra scrutiny or hassles from the border guard. Some on here have reported being hassled.

You also have to pay the commercial fee which I believe is $10 per trip or you get an annual sticker for $300. There was a time when they let us through without it but they told us if we go once a week we had to get the sticker, so we did.

Canada post is good . Your just gonna get in trouble or high fees trying to ship usps .

It's fine for Light Packet and Small Packet, just a little cheaper over in USPS although CP standard on Small Packet to USA is 1-2 weeks, no tracking, USPS standard is 2 days WITH tracking.

It's totally different story shipping above 1lb items to US or international. Try 19lb package from Toronto to Florida ($34.96 Small Business Rate) and from Niagara Town (e.g. 14305) to Miami, Florida (e.g. 33133) -> $8.95 for 2-day Priority Mail.

What is the cost of sending 4lb and 20lb to UK:

4lb - CanadaPost Small Packet Air is $46. For 20lb there is no Air service, only surface for $84, standard is 2 months, then couriers Xpresspost ($145) and Purolator ($234).

Now take both of these parcels to USPS and pay $35.15 flat rate up to 20lb (6-10 business days + tracking).

Kind of scary difference when considering that USPS is renting space in same or similar international cargo flights as CanadaPost.

If the Canadian Dollar fell back to 62 cents (I don't feel it's too risky to say that we will never see that again) it would wipe out most of the advantage of using USPS especially for 2kg and under.

When our Dollar was at 90 cents there was still a few select weight points where Canada Post was slightly cheaper (a few cents) for International. At par even that is gone.

On a few higher weight items the price difference between USPS Priority and CP Expedited-USA is actually quite small. Not much help really considering the much longer delivery times.

Unless you are REALLY close to the border you do need a reasonable volume to make using USPS direct worthwhile especially if you drive over in a gas guzzler and place any sort of value on your time.

For me its worth it. I live an hour and a half from the USPS in Niagara Falls. Even if I pay someone $20 an hour to drive there and back it'll be less then a $100 including gas. Many of my packages are to big for small packet. A recent inquiry from Australia into a motorcycle gas tank I have for sale had Canada post only offering priority mail for $600! due to the size of the box. Yet just across the border USPS says $80 for the exact same box. The buyer would never pay $600 but told me if I could get the shipping below $200 he would buy it. I usually ship enough to fill my mini van once a week making more then worth my while 🙂

I make the trip twice a week, usually with 10-30 small items a trip. For me the cost works out about the same, but it is much better for my customers. Less lost packages, no customs delays and even when something can not be delivered to the customer it is returned to me in Canada in a shorted amount of time then it takes to arrive to my customers if I ship it locally.

I must say there are alot of different stories when is comes to CP vs USPS. I live 5 minutes from Lynden, WA. So I used to make the trip there all the time, until several packages took 2 months to get to their destination in the US, they sure the heck didnt take the 2 days they promised in their ads. CP has been good to me, they are courteous, fast and do not take forever to settle a claim as USPS. As for guaranteed shipping times they are great, if you have a problem they are quick to respond. As for shipping items in Canada PRE PAID is the best way to go, you can send several items in the same shipment regardless of weight, plus it is sent Xpresspost with tracking and gets to Eastern Canada in less than 3 days. As for clearing customs that has nothing to do with CP that has to do with the country you are dealing with. Recently USPS hasnt even been delivering notices to their own customers, sending back packages as unclaimed, when I have kept in contact with the customer the whole time. I now must inform my customer when their package has arrived and they must hunt them down to receive them. THAT IS USPS not CPs fault.
I LOVE CANADA POST. (this opinion is just mine :))

How did you ship the packages with USPS? Parcel post can take a couple months, same with Media Mail. Priority Mail is the 2 - 3 day delivery option. Did you get delivery confirmation? For me, that's part of the point in using USPS, to get delivery confirmation to qualify for PayPal protection and to avoid buyers saying they never got it when they in fact did.

I've never had a Priority Mail package take that long to arrive. Never! Not even going to the UK or Australia. I think the longest within the US was 5 days and that's because there was a holiday in there. Longer than that is because the buyer didn't go to their post office to pick it up.

I don't know but I think you've done something wrong. I've had the occasional First Class package take a couple of weeks to arrive but never Priority Mail and only one package got eaten by their machines & one went to the Twilight Zone. I've been going over for a few years now. Since the fall of 04 I think.

I went down especially to make sure these packages made it in time for Christmas. But guess what, they didn't. That was with insurance and confirmation, etc. I guess they went to the north pole....By the way I just went down across the line today, to mail a parcel to the UK, to sent it from here was going to cost $29.80, that includes insurance and taxes, so I made a trip across the line, the PO was closed so I went to a business that deals with USPS UPS and Fedex. The PRICE WAS OVER $36.00 before insurance,:( she told me that they are not allowed to charge USPS prices. If the PO was open it would have cost $18.40 + $2.40 for insurance + 8.4% WA sales taxes = $22.75 + gas($4) = $26.75, boy that is NOT WORTH IT, the wait at the border of 30-45 minutes and the wait to come back another 30 minutes to an hour. I sure can get alot done around here in that hour to 2 hours wasted to save a few bucks. My time is worth way more than the amount saved. By the way I brought the parcel back and will mail it through CP. Way less hassle. 🙂 My post office is friendly helpful and convenient. That to me is WAY MORE IMPORTANT!! Also the USPS had a nice kiosk which I thought I would try, guess what it wouldn't do international packages. another dead end 😞 Could not do the postage online neither, 😞 Where is CP when I need it, oh yeah, right at my finger tips, as I type. 🙂 CP all the way.....baby

I'm with cottonwoodindustries! I love Canada Post! In the 7+ years that I've been on eBay....not one problem. The service from our rural post office is so warm and friendly. I value my time and to me the fuel to drive even one hour to the border, waiting in line for Customs, etc.....the cost has to be passed off to someone...probably the buyer. I can't believe that it's not being added in handling costs. Seems like the buyers would have more money in their pockets if Canada Post was used. However, to each their own! Susan

I asked what service you used as well but you didn't answer that.

Why wouldn't you have called to find out the hours of the location before going rather than wasting all that time?

If you called the USPS 800 number they could have told you the locations hours and if there was an afterhours location. That's how I found out about the one in Buffalo that was 24 hours.

Yep, to each their own.....but if you're going to make that effort, at least do it right. ;)
