What exactly is the discount when shipping to the US?

Wow..another question..lol..Today while printing up a label thru PP for Expedited USA I noticed my discount was this:
Includes a 5% discount from published Consumer Rates; also includes a fuel surcharge
Includes a 3% discount for domestic purchases and 4% discount for international purchases.

Now..I thought using this service there was a 25% discount..which is supposedly being lowered or is lowered now to 18% for certain shipping methods. So I check it out and I get two conflicting discounts from the CP's website:

Rates & prices

When you use eBay’s online shipping tool, you can choose one of the following options for shipping with Canada Post:

  • Calculate postage based on your parcel’s size, weight and destination and get the following discounts:*

    • Save 25% when you ship by Expedited Parcel™ within Canada or to the U.S.A.

    • Save 8% when you ship by Xpresspost™ and Regular Parcel™ within Canada.

    • Save 9% when you ship by Xpresspost – U.S.A. and Xpresspost – International.

    and this one also:

Shipping with Canada Post

Through eBay's online shipping solution, Canada Post provides you with:

So..which is it?..I phoned PP..they dumped me to Ebay who told me to call PP..I gave up..Am I doing something wrong now when printing up labels?..I distinctly remember a better discount before so I dunno if its me?..Any ideas?

I do not know what the 5% and 3% is. Hold over from old days.

The Canada Post website is out of date with recent changes about eBay discounts.
The eBay help pages are out of date. I sent an email to kalvin at ebay.com regarding the eBay help page specifically saying there is no Expedited discount at all!

Recent changes to Expedited Parcel rates here in this eBay announcement

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/ca/201303071017232.html

Here are the rates as I know them Canada Post Find-a-Rate for regular and Venture One rates and PayPal discounts

Lettermail, Letterpost USA and International - No V1 or PP discount (not an option on PP).

Light Packet USA and International - No V1 or PP discount.

Small Packet USA and International - No V1 or PP discount.

Tracked Packet USA - V1 5%, PP 14%

Tracked Packet International - V1 5% (verified), PP 14% (verified)

Expedited Parcel Canada - V1 5%, PP 18%

Expedited Parcel USA - V1 5% (verified), PP 18% (verified)

XpressPost Canada - V1 5%, PP 8%

XpressPost USA - V1 5% (verified), PP 9% (verified)

XpressPost International - V1 5%, PP 9%

I do not know about other services such as International Air and Surface. I think they get a 5% Venture One discount at the counter. Perhaps someone can confirm this.

When I say verified about, I tested EP USA (all 7 USA zones), TP USA and XP USA using Canada Post Find-a-Rate page for regular rates and Venture One rate and used PayPal ShipNow with USA addresses in a state in each zone. My tests confirmed that Venture One discount rate was around 5%, Tracked Packet USA was around 14%, Expedited Parcel USA was around 18% and XpressPost USA was around 9%.  Now I say around because it was not exactly 5, 9, 14, or 18%.  It was a little under or over, for example 4.8% or 5.3%.

I was going to do the same test for Expedited Parcel Canada, Tracked packet International and XpressPost International but did not get around to testing. It takes time to do because I test a lot of addresses and at all of the different weight breaks..

One test I did not do was test what the eBay listing shipping calculator shows relative to the Canada Post Find-a-Rate or the PayPal calculator.

Correction, I verified the Tracked Packet USA rates, not the International.

(I was able to verify the TP rates despite the PayPal TP calculator having issues at the time.)

Continuation:(didn't take full post)

Includes a 5% discount from published Consumer Rates; also includes a fuel surcharge
Includes a 3% discount for domestic purchases and 4% discount for international purchases.

And this is from Ebays announcement page in March

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/ca/201303071017232.html

So I think the new discount is 9% as I have tried it with other labels I need to print up for Expedited USA.

Kashka, The $23.41 business rate already includes a portion of the discount. If you go to the CP calculator and put in the same information, look at the top rate for that category than discount that by 18%. The total should be the same or similar as to what you are being charged in Paypal.

Is this for the $205 item? If so, you can save $2 in insurance by listing $200 as the insured value. That number does not have to be the same as the amount paid, you can insure for slightly less.

Send me a message (to keep address private) with the USA address and your postal code. I would like to test it using PayPal ShipNow and Canada Post options. To see how all options match up to the PayPal shipping page you got of an actual transaction.

On the details that you posted, I wonder what is the Small Business rate they show. It is not the full retail over the counter rate. I think it is the Venture One 5% discount rate since that is a business rate.

The discount shown on the PayPal page that you show details has never been correct. I have tried to get someone at eBay explain how the Small Business rate shown there relates to the full rate and the old 25% discount. It has always been effective 20-21% on the old 25% discount.

PJ..wow..ok..that explains it!..Duh!..I thought I had to be comprehending something wrong some where..lol

It's not the $205 one but another that is being combined so I had not checked CP's calculator first.Well this explains everything! I got thrown off with the the discount lines at the bottom of the PP label form regarding the discount show 5 and 4 percent and had known what the counter price was initially.

Oh..and thanks for the tip on the insurance..

Thanks so much!

🙂
