Why have I been charged a hefty importation fee on my last transaction? Shopowner says they didn't receive it.

Why am I paying an import charge of $15.62 this morning  on my purchase of a necklace and bracelet from the US? I have already been charged $11.00 for shipping and handling. I have never been charged like this before!!! To complicate the situation, the shopowner says they know nothing about it and have never received it (see conversations with this seller) so they can't reverse it on Paypal. It may the last thing I buy onlline if this is the case. Please explain.

I had this show up on some fabric that I had won.  I queried the seller and they said that it was a problemwith ebay.com's global shipping program.  My seller cancelled the sale for me.  Adjusted their listing and let me repurchase what I wanted.  This worked without the extra costs.

You are right , seller are unaware of import charges that may be assigned by Customs on import. Import charges( duty+ Taxes) are always the buyer's responsibility and can be charged on any import valued over $20. Canadian.

Normally these are collected on delivery. By mail many items slip through without being assessed.

All that said , here is what has changed. Ebay now has a Global Shipping Program that US sellers are beginning to sign onto. Items are shipped to a depot and transshipped . Pitney Bowes is running the program and handling collecting Customs charges. These are paid when checking out.

Look at your listing..Under shipping will see..import charges..To be provided at checkout

Any time that appears in a listing being viewed you will know that a seller is using Global and any import charges will be collected at checkout.

PS.. want to be clear.. import charges are paid to Canada Revenue Agency , are buyer's responsibility and have absolutely nothing to do with the seller who is only collecting his shipping cost.

Because you bought something from another country. That amont is not paid to the seller. That is why the seller said they didn't receive it. The seller only gets the $11.00 shipping. They have nothing to do with the cost of importing.

Non paying buyers deserve unpaid item strikes.
