Additional Notes From Today's Webinar (Dec 18)

Here's some additional notes I made from today's webinar (that I don't think were noted previously)

  • eIS is not currently available for authenticated items (sneakers / cards) but they're hoping to add that ability soon.
  • Do NOT include bonus items (gifts, etc) along with an item when sending things internationally. It can cause a headache for the buyer.
  • To automatically combine shipping using eIS (where possible), all items need to be added to the cart before checking out. This should also work for the international portion of the trip if using rate tables, but it may not work for the domestic portion which depends on your own policies.
  • If an auction item exceeds the $2000 / $2500 threshold for eIS and you do not have your own shipping set up, the international bidders should become automatically unable to bid any further.
  • They're working on a filter in seller hub to show Country Of Origin.
  • For items that are made with parts from different countries, the seller should probably pick the COO that has the greatest value or is specifically listed as the country of manufacture.
  • Variance in size and weight of an item will apparently be covered for both the buyer and seller. (I'm also a little unsure on that one, but that's what I think they said)
  • Expedited Lite should now be active for under 250g (I checked after the webinar and it did indeed give me an expedited lite quote at 249g).
  • No current plan to reenable Canada Post Tracked Packet USA in eBay Labels. There was no mention this time about future Zonos integration either, so something may have changed there.
  • There's going to be additional, more specialized shipping related webinars in the new year.

@flipistics Thanks for sharing.

Regarding the point about sellers being unable to access cp for the USA for anyone who tries to create a label with CP using level 1 discount the difference is substantial. As a random example Canada to USA vs the discount rings in at 60%. About a 10. 00 difference. On a just over 1 kg shipment using my CP account to Ontario the rate was 30 and change. The eBay rate was 20 and change. About same difference for expedited.

Maybe there will be a time when we can access the eBay rates for personal/outside of eBay shipments? Hey....1 can dream!!!

Great summary. Thank you!

This point reinforces what I (and many others here) have been thinking or mentioning in the board.

eBay is NOT interested in bringin back CP labels to the USA. Period. They are going to laser-focus on their eIS from now on.

Yeah, although they specifically mentioned future Zonos integration last time so that was a bit of a surprise. FWIW, Luke wasn't the one who stated that this time or previously, it was other members of his team who were answering questions in the Q&A.

I was there and saw that response in real time. The response was ambiguous at best. I feel like the person answering the question misinterpreted it, or was unclear in what they were trying to say.

I'm with others that agree it's unlikely we will ever get Zonos integration with eBay Labels.

Re: Additional Notes From Today's Webinar (Dec 18)

Thanks for the summary!

Did they mentions anything about many sellers having issues with some listings randomly not being available to ship to the US despite being enrolled in EIS? I'm personally affected (half my listings aren't available to US buyers for some reason) and I've seen quite a few others mentioning this issue on forums and reddit. I've emailed EIS but haven't had a response yet.

Are all your listings on dot CA?
Because until very recently I was listing almost exclusively on dotCOM, and those listings are not eligible for eISCanada*.

My newer dotCA listings are eligible for eISCanada.

*nor for eIS USA of course.

Sort of. They mentioned something about erring on the side of caution right now. Generating the paperwork for some things is very complex so they are being temporarily excluded. I can't remember the wording they used, but it sounds like more items will gradually be eligible as they refine their algorithms. They seem to understand that the problem exists.

A note on Expedited Lite, Luke mentioned something to the effect of them still working with Canada Post regarding Expedited Lite charged as Expedited.  So we can still expect to maybe see some second charges on Expedited Lite labels but should have automatic refunds to correct these.

From the information about EIS "Being cautious" so many exclusions for EIS to the US it sounds like the complexity of figuring out the US import system is causing  problems.  I bet exporting from the US to other countries with standard requirements is a lot easier under the US EIS.    It does make the case to use EIS Canada for non-US sales and go direct with CP/Zonos, etc. to ship to the US.

@byto253

I think eIS "may" work fine for anyone close to the hub for shipping internationally....but not so well or as good for someone located in a distant corner of Canada like way out west. For anything going to Australia, me being in Calgary items go from here direct to Richmond and then on to AU. For Europe my stuff goes mtl and is overseas in 3 to 4 days max total. Cheaper, faster and MUCH less extra handling. Adding the line about VAT takes a second or 2 vs something getting handed off to courier with higher customs clearance fees compared to just shipping CP Tracked Intl.

As for using Zonas to USA may be okay for duty free but not so good when those fees are seller expenses.

I was thinking more about reports that a lot of items that are showing as having EIS shipping but then are excluded.   For sure the closer to the hub the more realistic it is and they won't allow batch shipping.

Re: CP to the USA on eBay.
They don't even have to consider integrating zonos, they just need to reopen access to CP US labels and add the extra field that Canada Post already has in their label flow, on their own CP Snap Ship website, where we add the zonos code!!! I don't mind using zonos if I could access the lower CP rates to the US through eBay. If we want to show our own shipping to the US on our .ca listings, we have to enter flat rates to reflect tariffs and the higher rate we have to pay CP on Snap Ship. If you use calculated it shows the ebay discounted rate. If you turn off "passing on eBay discounts" then all the other rates to everywhere else are also inflated. I know you can manipulate that option to a certain % off in that setting, but who knows what that is for Canada or Int'l postal rates? And, if we enter flat rates for the USA that means we have to enter Flat Rates for Int'l too!! I want flat rate for the US and keep calculated for Int'l overseas.
I confirmed with Luke that Stephanie didn't mean that eBay was considering integrating zonos. She was referring to EIS on .ca where EIS calculates tariffs.
As to items NOT showing EIS to USA, I have lots. And some make no sense. What I have determined thus far, anything metal or wood is a "no go". Doesn't matter if it's kitchenware or a figurine. A lot of toys are excluded even if vintage and collectible, however not all. Only some. And this is what makes no sense.
I want to be able to filter for items not showing EIS US so I can either add my own flat rate shipping or put those items BACK on .com so I can sell them. Right now it is tedious to open each listing to test if it shows EIS US or not.

I wonder if Zonos even allows 3rd party  label providers to do so. It's possible Canada Post isn't allowed to offer it.

@byto253

Batch shipping would be an awesome addition for the sellers who sell loads of smallish items. In basic terms all eIS is a glorified freight forwarder. One would easily believe they would have the capability to open a box with multiple pieces and forward in the correct directions?!?!?

Re: Additional Notes From Today's Webinar (Dec 18)

You would think!  My thoughts would be to have a number of auctions end on the same day, with auto payment enabled, then they could be batched up.  End on a Thursday or Friday, ship on Monday in a batch.

eBay could easily integrate Zonos if they wanted to, I think it's clear they want to direct business to EIS instead. It only took a couple of weeks for Etsy to set up Zonos for Canada Post integrated into their label system.

I agree.

EBay went from in-house processing with Billpoint, to Paypal, to buying PP and making it their in-house processor, to being forced to shed PP, to setting up in-house payment processing with Managed Payments.

When they looked at how comfortable US & UK sellers were with GSP/eIS, they went with extending freight forwarding  for Canadian sellers too.

There is a parallel.

Don't forget wanting to be our go to when it comes to "majority" of our shipping needs with eBay labels. We'll avoid mentioning/including UPS/Fedex. May as well be saying Wullerton. (Corner gas reference.)
