Additional protections for sellers with auction-style listings

We recognize that the password reset may temporarily interrupt the normal bidding process for buyers. We’re taking additional steps to ensure successful transactions for sellers:

  • All listing and final value fees will be refunded automatically for auction-style listings that ended between 6:00 AM PDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, and 11:59 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Sellers will see these credits on their June invoice.

  • Sellers can end any auction-style listings without penalty between 6:00 AM PDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, and 11:59 PM PDT on Saturday, May 31, 2014 and will receive a credit for all selling fees related to these listings on their June invoice.

  • Sellers can also cancel any auction-style listings that ended in a sale between 6:00 AM PDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, and 11:59 PM PDT on Saturday, May 31, provided the buyer paid with PayPal and we can verify through PayPal that the buyer’s full payment has been refunded.
  • Final value and listing fees will be credited on sellers’ June invoice and any associated defects or negative buyer feedback removed. These protections will be applied automatically.

We will also be communicating with the winning bidder for any cancelled auction-style transaction during this time period to ensure they continue to have great buyer experiences on eBay.

We apologize for any inconvenience or concern this situation may cause. Nothing is more important to us than the security and trust of every customer in our global marketplace. We know you have high expectations of us, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and secure online experience for you on any connected device. More information and updates are available at info.ebayinc.com.

Thank you for selling on eBay.
Sincerely,
Michael Jones

I don't understand why ebay needs to send us this kind of message.

Does it means that any listings we listed, it will have problems or what?  eBay needs to explain more clearly than just this vague informaiton.

I don't really understand it either... but I think it might have something to do with the new "defect" system for cancellations. However, I thought that system was not in effect yet... am I mistaken?

The new defect system doesn't impact seller status until at least August 20th (when evaluations under the new rules take effect), but defects are already being recorded (since mid-April, 2014).

Once evaluation begins, it will be done retroactively, either on a 3-month or 12-month basis, depending on your sales volume.  I seem to recall one of the eBay.ca staffers mentioning that for sellers on a 12-month review cycle, the first evaluation under the new system will actually be March, 2015, but I'm afraid I can't locate the source quote at the moment.

Most low to mid-volume sellers will have a 12-month "look-back", so it's important to keep defects to a minimum, since you won't "recover" from accumulated defects as quickly as sellers with a high volume (who can basically start with clean slate every 3 months at worst).

I believe you're correct that this move by eBay is intended to prevent defects due to cancelling bids or ending auctions during the period when most users would be switching passwords -- but why a change in passwords would impact bids or auctions I can't quite see, and eBay doesn't make it clear.  It's just a guess, but maybe they've found some users are having trouble logging in after a password change?

Thanks Rose! I didn't realise that it was retroactive. Very unfair in my opinion...

As for why a change in passwords may impact a seller... I think that some buyers may use it as an excuse and say "can you cancel my bid/purchase, my account was hacked?".

"As for why a change in passwords may impact a seller... "

There was a major impact on some sellers. Many buyers could not log in to bid so auctions sold lower than they would have. I myself us a different account to buy. I placed bids via a sniper program to execute while I was away from on a trip to Toronto to assist someone getting a hip replacement. 3 of my bids were more than the winning one, one by quite a lot. Because eBay required the password change and I had not made it the bids could not be executed and 3 sellers got less than they would have,
