Im just not sure when bidding if I can take it back before the auction time is over? I clicked "ok" when it was talking about buyer commitment/ to make sure I paid for the item upon winning the bid. Just wondering if I will be penalised if I back out of my bid at this point :S

If you have already committed to buy the item, and you do not pay, there will not really be a penalty against you. There will be a "strike" on your account which is not good, but as long as it does not show a pattern and you do not do it again you should be okay. The seller can not leave you negative feedback, but if the item is cheap its better just to honor your bid. It is a hassle for the seller to get back the fees they incurred during that sale. You won't be making any friends, and will probably be blocked by that seller for future purchases. You have to weigh the pros and cons and the decide if the dollar value is worth pissing someone off, even if it is over the internet.

You can ask the seller to cancel your bid. She doesn't have to, but it is quicker than going for the Unpaid Item Dispute and Strike to get her selling fees back.

Did you know that sellers pay about 20% of the selling price to eBay and Paypal in fees on items that sell?

You can expect to be Blocked by that seller if she does cancel your bid.

You can also Retract your bid (Site Map bottom left) but these Retractions show on your feedback page and some sellers take them into account when deciding whether to accept your bid.
