I tried to add an account for direct debit, and it asked for a "routing number".. I tried adding the transit and branch account number and it did not like that.. I phoned the bank and they did not know what a routing number is... I have a CIBC US account... can anyone help?
thanks so much!

Generally a "routing number" refers to the US system - I tbelieve it's 9 digits aka an ABA code I think.

Canadian banks will use a 3 digit institution code and a 5 digit branch or transit code, along with an account number. Some credit unions are different from this...

Most Canadian banks gave a US operation. You cannot open a US bank acount at your branch. They can only open a US $ bank account (completely different).

I deal with Toronto Dominion/Canada Trust in Canada but have a US bank account in New Jersey with TD Waterhouse.
I did not have to go to NJ to set it up.

Call your bank's toll free number for head office information and ask them. They will help you.

Your US account will have the required 9 digit transit micro encoding for your US PayPal transactions etc.
