Canadian Powersellers : Useful tips to quickly get the 15% discount

Hi everyone,

Many people around here are complaining about the fact that it's impossible to get that 15% discount if you are a Canadian Powerseller. I am Canadian and I quickly ramped up my DSR to get that 15% discount on fees. For your information, I still have my DSR at 4.7 for shipping charges in my feedback page (last 12 months), but the dashboard 30 days rating is now at 4.88! And it's the 2nd month I get 15%. Here are my complete 30 days DSR :

Item as described - 4.84
Communication - 4.95
Shipping time - 4.93
Shipping charges - 4.88

How I achieve this 30 days DSR ? That was no big deal.

About DSR, the only difference for a Canadian compared to an American is "Shipping time" and "Shipping charges", everybody agrees with that.

About "Item as described", you just don't screw buyers with blurred pics or hiding flaws, because you will obviously pay for it one day or another, nothing new here.

But about "Communication", what if I told you this is the communication that will help the most to increase your "Shipping time" and "Shipping charges" DSR, I'll explain later.

But first of all, you have to ship very quickly. Item has to be shipped within 24h, same day if possible. Ship what you packaged during the last 24h at end of day, right before post office closes, and do this business everyday. That's your job, don't get cheap on shipping time, you'll pay for it. Also, don't even think making profit with shipping charges, you can't do this at the same time you get the 15% (some of you could think "whatever, I make more money with profit than 15% off", but only one way could lead to a negative feedback if you exaggerate!). Add packaging material to Canada Post shipping cost, that's all. If you can't make your profit exclusively from the items you are selling here, you are not in business anyway, you are just screwing people with hidden fees.

I already hear many Canadian Powersellers saying "I ship within 24h but buyers only think about delivery time, because delivery took a while", or "Canada Post charge too much compared to USPS". You are right, so right. You cannot change this, solution is elsewhere. Here how to change all this :

1) Ship same day or next day after payment is received, your buyer would like the item to be shipped the minute payment is sent, that is normal.

2) Very quickly send a shipping confirmation email though eBay system, if you don't have an automated function to send shipping confirmation emails. Try something like this :

Hi,

Thank you for your payment. Your item has quickly been shipped this Thursday, July 3.

Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any question or concern.

Best regards,

Eric

Don't forget to rename the email title "Shipping confirmation for item #1234567890", instead of eBay default title, it will save you many "Item not received yet, when did you ship my item?" time wasting emails.

3) For questions from buyer, always begin your email with "I'll be happy to help you with your question", even if the buyer seems tense. You are a professional.

Another tip about responding to questions, always wish "good luck" to a potential bidder in your response. Many people are superstitious and will be encouraged to win the item.

4) Buy self-printable business card and print them onb both sides with this :

side 1 - Of course, your logo, username, store name, email address, etc.

side 2 - Here is a good example of what is on my card :

Thank you for leaving positive feedback for the top
service you received :

-Accurate item description with detailed picture

-Item shipped within 24h (on business days)

-Shipping notification sent / questions responded within hours

-Exact Canada Post shipping cost (including packaging material)

Your business is appreciated. Please do not hesitate to send an email if you have any question or if you need assistance with your order...

This card, inserted in your package, will make all the difference. Why ? Simply because you are telling your buyer exactly what you did for him, at the same time he will open the package and enjoy the item. This is the most important moment of the transaction. This is when you remind the buyer you did great. Many chance they will quickly and gladly leave a great positive feedback for you, with perfect DSR, simply because you tell them to.

4) Your satisfied buyers will help you keeping a very good DSR, but only if they come back. I created a system of three feedback comments for them, to make them feel a good very welcomed customer :

My default feedback comment for a new buyer is used to directly invite to purchase again.

Fast payment, thanks! Great eBayer, highly recommended! A+++ Come back anytime!

For a second purchase, I use the following comment.

Fast payment, thank you ! Great repeat buyer, highly recommended ! A+++

At the third purchase, just show you love to do business with the buyer.

Fast payment as always, thanks! Wonderful repeat buyer, highly recommended! A+++

And please, leave the feedback comment at the same time you send shipping confirmation. Your buyer will see it as a very good start, and anyway you cannot leave negative or neutral. Don't be afraid and most of all don't think "I won't leave any feedback if I don't receive positive". Just show your appreciation, you will look confident about your professionalism and anyway your little business card will do the rest of the job.

5) Remain positive and do your best.

Do these 5 things, nothing less, and your DSR will rise. Otherwise, that is laziness and you don't deserve 15% discount.

Good luck with your new and improved professionalism!

Eric

Thanks Susan. In case it got lost in my last posting, I will repeat it. Do all you can in the 3 categories you do have a say in and there is a good chance the 4th category, which you do not have much of a say in ( S & H charges), will take care of itself.

And not 24 hours later, this is the bombshell I find when checking my DSR's. Link to the U.S. Power Sellers Discussion Board.

Hmmmm....

As it turns out, I actually ship within 6 hours of payment and some days that means 3 trips to the post office. The costs are calculated to the cent and all avaible means to cost reduce shipping have been applied. If you look at my feedback you will that every one says fast shipping, cheap shipping great communication and item exeeded expectations.... yet the DSRs keep going down and down and down..... I used to get 5.0 's

There are only 2 possible explanations... eBay is lowering them or the buyers are lying. I suggest if your DSRs are falling every week/month that you monitor them extensively, which means checking every time you see your feedback score change so you know why for sure.

What you will discover is that buyers are buying into eBay's leave average DSR campaign. Further proof can be found in the overall averages for all sellers on eBay, the base line is dropping rapidly as well. This is why the only meaningfull measurement is the deltas, and my deltas have not dropped, they are always better than the eBay average by close to the same percentage they have always been, which is a much more acurate picture of what is really going on.

Changes to the feedback system were long overdue and placing more weight on the buyer than the seller is a reasonable change, but it's nothing less than insulting for eBay to try and fool sellers that they got anything out of those changes other than more grief.

Personally I couldn't care less about a power seller rebate on DSRs as it will never amount to enough to buy a medium double double for small sellers like me. The rub is that a company that has a total profit of 4.5% of sales thinks it's an authority on anything. Then again, with profits that disgusting, I'd be screwing everyone and everything in sight too...

So what makes you think that others are not doing as much as you? I always ship within 24 hours, I provide new packaging, lots of bubble wrap, styrofoam, I don't even charge cost of shipping, I write the purchaser telling them how their item is being shipped, I thank them for the purchase and quick payment and I express a hope that they will visit my eBay store again soon.
Your items are small, don't require extensive packaging or high insurance so you don't have to charge much. Try charging $50 for shipping (when it cost you over $100) and see if its appreciated.

I am not saying other are not doing as much as I do. Just want to help others. Have you tried every tips I suggested, by the way ?

You are right, I am selling small items which don't cost a lot to ship. But have you tried what I did suggest - the "recap" business card inserted in your package - explaining your buyer you did not make profit on shipping ?

For my part, I always believed it wasn't a good idea to sell on eBay heavy items that are expensive to ship, I tried it a few times, but decided to continue almost exclusively with items that are under $10 to ship...

purse_of_the_legionary: No, I don't put a "recap" business card into my packages. Its not professional. Purchasers are not interested in your problems, they have their own to deal with. That is not saying they are not "feeling" people. Just that your problems are yours and you should keep it to yourself. Their only interested is getting the product they purchased with minimal intrusion in their life. I not only sell on eBay, I buy too. I hate "notes" in my packages and all the repeat email from certain sellers. They just waste my time.

It is NOT the seller's responsibility to "educate the public". It is eBay's responsibility to use precise language and make their services "user friendly" so that "satisfactory" is recognized as a successful transaction. Anything less is misleading.

First, I am not talking about my problems to my buyers on the card, I am just encouraging them to leave a positive feedback because they received a great service, with great DSR. Please let me know what is not professional in this text on my business card :

What makes you believe I don't get $100.00 profit per sale ??? Because an item is heavy doesn't mean it worths more! I sometimes make 1000% profit on my very tiny items... Look at my listings, I am no 1$ dollar store! And I am taking it very easy during the summer, you should see my store during the winter.

Anyway, we're not exactly in the same department, it's very hard to compare. I am dealing with ancient artifacts collectors, 48% of my customers are repeat buyers.

Frankly, I believe you have way more reasons than me to recap your buyers about the fact you did not make profit on shipping cost when they receive their items, because shipping cost is high...

There are many little things that can be done.

(1)Communication, communication, communication

(2) Words that express a personal touch

(3) Keep buyer informed.... but with a minimum of emails.

(4) If actual postage is less than charged to the buyer, make a refund.

(5) Tighten up the look of your parcels...

(6) Pack things like you were the one that is going to receive the parcel.

(7) If buyer is slow in paying... Do not hit buyer over the head because of that.

(8) Take great care of international buyers.

Be aware of the fact that who you are will come out in all communications... Examine very carefully the words you use, and how you put them together... Read the email like you were on the other end receiving it.

After many years of selling, one can get an appreciation of the character of the buyer... It is what they say, and how they word the email.

Here is my latest finding.... Communication

Sent the following to the buyer....

Thanks for purchasing this song book.

It will be in the mail on Thursday, July 24

Via airmail delivery could take 7 to 10 days...as it has to go through customs in either Toronto or Vancouver.

Here is buyer's response

Wow, I really like the customer service. I appreciate the personal reply, and look forward to the arrival of my book.
----------------------------------------
Buyers do like the personal touch, the care in prepartion of the parcel, and above all the right kind of communication.

and remember ... You cannot please all of the people all of the time...

So if someone fires at you... Think about how to respond and sometimes the best thing to do is walk away...

Hi , all just 2 input here , for some its all about the luck of the draw . get one or 2 bad customer , they ruin it all .

eBay most definitely has its own agenda , face it there is no way for a buyer to rate 4.5 so eBay is askin sellers to get 100% or regardless of what they get they are penalized .give buyer the oporunity to rate 4.5 you ll see less failing there dsr ...

if I wouldn t be a seller I would NEVER rate 100% simply because nothing is perfect, even if you would give me free shipping I would have already compared with other' s price and would know farewell shipping is included in the price of the item ( even hto sometimes its not ) ...

Eric great advice and I am glad it works for you , truth is I do everything you do except I do it differently for the card , do it via email , I use to be very hi everywhere with 100% then in a month my shipping and handling fee dropped to 4.22 and got 1 neutral so dropped below 99% . believe me it can happen to anyone .

The DSR system sucks and is not fair. The seller has no way to communicate or dispute the ratings left against them by buyers. My rating dropped to 4.4 and all the feedback shows every one is satisfied with the service. If the system was transparent so we could communicate with buyers dissatisfied with some area we could remedy the problem. Don

Forgot I had a nonpaying buyer from Hell the other day that will knock my ratings for sure. He wanted me to ship his item for $5.99 and he would pay the remaining $10.00 after he received his item. Of course he left a negative after I refunded his money. eBay will not even answer my emails. Don

I'm thinking that even if we discount the cost of gas.. is that 15% savings on fees really worth what we are doing to our planet.

I am really fortunate as I have a new neighbour who also is a powerseller. He walks to the post office a few times a day and has offered to take my items.. on the days we have too much to carry he drives.

I live 5 minutes away from the post office and I drive a Toyota Yaris, in my case I don't think I am polluting by going to post office everyday, and most of the time it's on my way anyway... I even use natural corn puff type peanuts instead of non-biodegradable styrofoam to fill my packages, hehe ! Green !

Very happy to see another perfectionist, join the club ! And don't take care about other sellers who try to discourage people like us, when they pretend we are loosing time and energy pleasing our customers. It makes me happy when my buyers are satisfied, that's not just a money thing...

You should try the recap card inserted in your packages. I discovered this because a seller did this to me, and I thought it was very professional, he was telling me what he did for me on the back of his card (which is a good thing, because you don't always remember if item was shipped fast, how was communication, shipping cost, etc., when you open your package and leave feedback). I had no other choice but to give great rating, as seller was right by saying he did a great job...

My stress levels have dropped a lot after I stopped caring about my DSRs.

I:

- Ship ~3 times a week
- Send a terse "thanks, your item was shipped today" email to buyers
- Don't bother including notes or invoices in packages
- Don't typically follow up with buyers to ensure satisfaction and remind them to leave feedback

This is what I've always done and have done for the last five years I've sold items on eBay.

While I edged close to losing powerseller status and got the 75% restriction for a while, resolving all my outstanding complaints fixed that. My 30-day DSRs are all around 4.6, enough to get the 5% discount. Somehow they went up by a point from the previous 30-day mark.

The reality, IMHO, is that the DSRs are worthless. They are a carrot on a stick. They affect low-volume sellers a lot but at my ~800-1000 item per month volume they don't dent me much. And low-volume sellers who aim for the high DSRs are the ones who get the least money back from eBay as a discount. If your FVFs were only $200 for a month, you get a whopping 30 bucks back after having probably spent more than 30 keeping problem customers happy by issuing unnecessary refunds, or wasting extra hours of your time.

I obviously do realize that some sellers want to maintain a higher standard, for their own personal reasons, be they moral, principle, or whatnot. That's totally fine. I unfortunately run an "eBay business" and cannot concern myself with the DSRs anymore so long as I can maintain powerseller status. I think eBay's system is really skewed and damages smaller sellers quite a lot, and has the potential to damage me as well, but I'm finding that muscling my way through it with volume is giving me better results than trying to improve customer service does.
