Comparing third party insurance companies

Hi all-

I have been looking at a few recommended insurance companies (UPIC and DSI)

Now, small packet comes with insurance, and DSI and UPIC do not insure these anyway. As far as I can tell, they insure Expedited and Xprasspost only.

How is this beneficial for us Canadian sellers? These packages already come with insurance from Canada Post, right?

From what I understand, these 2 companies will only insure shipments that are traceable. BUT, what is the benefit for us?

I wish I had the money to start up a company that could provide tracking or DC for the packages that the PO does not...now that would be a booming trade! LOL

Any input?

I've used neither service and only briefly skimmed their websites in the past.......

It has been my understanding from many posts on the US boards that these companies will insure ALL forms of mail as well of course as other type of shiping.

It's possible that there are restrictions on mail which originates from outside the USA but I just had a quick look at DSI and I don't see any. The only mention of Expedited/Xpresspost is this one:

DSI policy holders do not have restrictions based on whether their chosen class of shipping service is traceable or not. However, when ordering coverage for a one time shipment online, you must ship your parcel by one of the carriers and classes listed here.

This means that the restriction does not apply to their "active shipper program" which is what a regular seller would be using as it is much cheaper than the single shipment program.

For specific clarification go to the source.

From outside observation UPIC seem to be the most popular in the USA but possibly DSI provides a better service to non-American sellers.

DSI pays claims for what you insure it for, not for what you paid for the item, and the claims process is (supposedly) simpler that with CP, which I have no problem in believing.

I use DSI. They insure everything, including Small Packet over $100 and lettermail!!!

Although Canada Post will insure the first $100 on small packet and expedited, I use DSI for this coverage and build it into my cost. I don't need the hassle of proving the value of an item I sold. DSI will pay based on final selling price and not the purchase price of an item.

I believe the same applies to U-Pic. I chose DSI over U-Pic because of rates and the maximum they would insure my parcels for.

One more important thing. DSI will cover for breakage, assuming of course that it was packaged properly!
