Not responsible for items that are not insured

Why does that sentence (or similar) appear in so many listings? And I mean listings from sellers with 1,000's of FB.

Bluff?
Ignorance?

Or is there something that I don't get here?

sunrunnerultra,

100% agree!

Wes,

I take you do not sell much outside of Canada, USA and the UK as everywhere else, addresses are "unconfirmed"?

North America aside, it is absolutely standard practice to ask for bank account info.In most of Europe, sellers have that info printed right on their letterhead, business cards and websites.

I often get asked for my banking info. I generally inform the buyer that the bank-to-bank money transfers they are used to likely don't apply to sending money to Canada and that it would be cost-prohibitive to do a wire-transfer.

In some countries you can even click an eBay sanctioned link to open an on-line bank account.

In some countries, most listings have a link which in effect is "click here to get the seller's bank account info"

You see, in North-America we have this hyped-up paranoia when it comes to banking info.

I am not advocating you should give your buyers your banking info if you don't want to but, between that and "buyer breaking rules" is a huge gap.

I hope you don't think it's "pick on Wes day" but your listings don't state that you do not accept paypal payments from buyers with unconfirmed addresses.

Would you not concur that this is a problem just waiting to happen?

Like Xena, I mainly use Lettermail, and I have to agree that although I do 'play poker' with some issues with astonishing results, I agree that this is a very negative statement to make "Seller assumes all resposibility". I also believe that Bill's statement "I have a very good idea" is also valid in a lot of cases.
As well, "optional" should always be there and insurance inclusive is the best way, but still ultimately optional should the Buyer request it be removed.
I carry multiple items of most of what I sell and I do require, although still optional, additional insurance.
this is not a way to take the client for more $, it's just a matter of 'Self Insuring', meaning that I or the customer don't have to fight with the post office, I simply just send out another identical copy of the item, or outsource one should my stock run out & in the rare instance of one being lost. Of course the customer always has the opportunity to decline, but the instance of that is much less than 5%. In fact, almost all who emailed me about this liked it and took it. It has cut my losses down to a +.
I came up with this idea some years ago after fighting many battles with Paypal and Canada Post on other sites here & private sites/stores.

Funny thing to, I signed up for that Auctiva in August, used this method on their site to perform this same service, a month later they were sending out emails to sellers offering the same service. Coincidence?

It would make sense to charge a higher shipping price with insurance for products that weights about 1/2 lbs. However, for a trading card seller to charge shipping about $5 for Canada/USA and about $10 for international just for one or two cards would be exaggerate. It's just paper and it only weights about 7 grams per card. Anyone who price more than $3 for shipping will not be able to sell any product.

And for the banking info, I actually didn't know that europeans print their bank account info on their website, business cards, etc. However, I still feel unsafe just to give out these info to customers. Beside, ebay does have privacy policy to protect buyers/sellers regardless of which country you are in. What company does in Europe doesn't mean everywhere else does it.

As for my listing, I never said I don't accept Paypal payment with unconfirmed address. I mentioned on my shipping policy: "Buyers pay via Paypal with an unconfirm address may not use regular shipping".
For this reason, I refused a lot of payment with unconfirmed address.
