Sellers S/H Cost, can buyers undestand it???

25 min ago a buyer open a PayPal Dispute against me and that was his message:

"I know this was not processed by some large company. Was charged $1.50 of shipping and handling of 2 stickers and yet the post mark was for $0.52 cents, the cost of a 1st class letter anywhere in Canada. So the fact is the stickers real cost is $4.00 per as to $3.50 because the shipper makes more depending where the buyer lives. To me it sounds suspicions and not above board. Very happy with the stickers and its what I wanted but the shipping cost arent accurate. Thank you"

And that was my reply:

"Hello, 1.5$ are the Cost of SHIPPING and HANDLING, Inner Canada S/H cost is as follow: 0.52$+Envelop+Printing on envelop+mailer machine cost and monthly fees+2 employees 14$/hour salary working in the shipping department all that means that each envelop to be shipped cost us around 1.65$, as per Mr Mitchell description for "non accurate" still has right but in HIS FAVOR not our, because the sticker real cost is 3.35$ not 3.50$ nor 4$ as Mr Mitchell calculated, i would advise Mr Mitchell to try once to sell on eBay!!, Best regards"

Any comments????

Hi charlymaal,

I'm not sure who has written what, however, I sell scrapbooking supplies and amongst the items I sell are stickers, laser cuts, eyelets, brads, etc. Stickers come in all shapes, sizes, thicknesses, etc so not knowing exactly what you purchased or sold makes it a bit more difficult to respond.

However, I will say that a seller is entitled to charge for shipping (and tax within Canada), the envelope, packing supplies (including tape, label) and I imagine labor as well....afterall someone has to package the items!

Keep in mind that if a buyer were to turn their car on and drive or take a bus to and from a store and back to where they live...then $1.50 in shipping/handling fees is most definitely a better deal AND fair and reasonable.

I guess those are the things to think about when making the arguement that $1.50 if fair and reasonable.

Hope this helps,
Susan

Hi charlymaal,

Well, as I mentioned...I think the shipping/handling is 100% fair.

Respond with kindness, but firmness, to the dispute and state your case. I honestly can not see PayPal going against you here. State facts without emotions and I think you'll be fine.

The rules for shipping/handling are clear and $1.50 for shipping is not outrageous. It is more than fair.

Best of luck!

It's absolutely amazingly fair. Only PayPal transaction cost is $0.29 plus percentage.

One other thing to mention is that stamp actually cost $.52+GST=$.55. I have been sending out a letter with every purchase regardless of the cost stating exactly what the handling charge is and what that includes, then at the end, I say, I hope you enjoy the items and have a great day.

Well I'm new at all this discussion stuff so forgive me if I break some of the good manners rules - I just had to vent. I used to get up every morning and could hardly wait to get to the computer - these days I dread it - it's like going to battle. I spend more time defending Canada Post than I do listing items. I weigh and measure every single item I list, I ship world wide - I only get complaints from our US buyers. If I were to go into a store and didn't like the prices I wouldn't buy anything. I make sure my shipping charges are completely transparent, Canada Post shipping charges, $2.00 handling my charge, less 65% on additional item in a combo shipment. eBuyers buy from me and then give me a bad DSR rating on shipping times and costs. How do I deal with this? I am about to loose my power seller discount and possibly my rating because an American is angry our Canada Post costs more than their USPS. I think it is time that eBay.ca helps with this situation. I'd like to hear what other sellers think. Thanks mermaid142

Hello mermaid142 🙂
Try not to let one buyer bring you down so much. This buyer is obviously difficult and doesn't comprehend at all the time, labour and all costs associated with the shipping procedure. They feel it just should be the price of the postage and that's it. They don't bother to think of the sellers labour, time and materials that are involved in the shipping process. Like you said in your reply to that buyer is just try selling once! I feel the same way before a buyer starts bad mouthing a seller because they feel shipping costs are too high they should try to sell themselves then they will be better able to understand all that is involved in shipping and item(s) to a buyer. Then perhaps they would be quiet about it and accept it the way it is. I myself right in my auctions explain that shipping is more then the cost of the stamp(s) on the package and state everything that is included in shipping. I also place in under my policy section that if one doesn't agree with the shipping costs please don't bid. Then when a buyer complains to me about shipping costs I kindly remind them that when they placed their bid they agreed to the shipping costs. That usually works and I don't hear another word about it. No worries mermaid142 all sellers have had shipping complaints you're not the first and you won't be the last so don't let the small things get to you and just go with the flow. I find that out of every 1 difficult buyer I have a tone of wonderful good buyers. So I don't let that one difficult buyer get to me I focus on the good not the bad! Hope this helps! 🙂
