Who pays for shipping a replacement item send to buyer deemed defective??

I have a regular same item I sell.  Now I have a defective unit out of 4 units the buyer purchased.  Not sure how I handle the shipping of replacement to buyer? I would obviously request defective one be sent back.  Any thoughts?  My suggestion was, if I can ask them if they were interested in buying a couple more it would save me the shipping and I would throw a free one in for them once defective one received.

Buyer should not have to pay anything in the case of a defective item.

Don't know the details but do you really want to pay to have a defective item sent back to you?

You send him another one or give him a full refund but don't ask buyer to return defective item, as it could cause some buyer in-satisfaction and will lead to low rating on feedback.

You could ask picture of item to buyer  showing that item is really defective, but this could also cause buyer in-satisfaction and low rating on feedback.
