 He insists that I pay him from my bank account with a direct transfer his. This transaction would not go through EBAY

A seller isn't allowed to move the sale off ebay. Go back to that message and use the report tools down at the very bottom to send a head's up to ebay to look at them more closely.

Is the seller in Europe? Particularly Germany?

This is a very ordinary method of payment there, I understand.

You could let him know that these transfers are uncommon and very expensive in Canada. I seem to recall they cost around $25 but I'm not sure if that is giving or recieving.

But basically, the seller cannot demand any payment that cannot be electronically traced.
