The Teachers' ….from their side of the fence

Always good to hear the ‘other side’ of the story and hear information and facts that the government and the media so conveniently keep from the public.

It’s about an hour long so if you are so inclined to get a more balanced perspective here it is……….

The Teachers' ….from their side of the fence

I have no problem with what teachers make. i have a prolem with the union protecting teachers that if they were in the real world would have been fre years and years ago. when was the last time you heard of a teacher losing their job?

here is an example-las year my daughter took grade 11 chemistry.(even the pricipal said be prepared to take it again next year as the course do not have man pass) great thing to boost moral. She took the course and the course average was 43% highest mark was 61%. My daughter did pass with a 54%. This year new teacher and she took grade 12. just finished a harder course and came out with a 88% now either this teacher marks easy or the other marks hard or is just not getting through to the students. 1 or the other is not doing their job correctly. The average grade for the grade 11 teacher is 49% every year for the past 7 years.

there can not be that many students having problems in one course and not others. This has been brought tothe attention of the principal and the board and they say "sorry our hands are tied"  There are a lot of kids missing out on college because most college only get to see their grade 11 marks before they accept a child and marks like this hold them back. In my daughters school at least 50% of the kids that graduate go back for a 'victory" lap just so they can bring up that 1 grade or if the need grade 12 chemistry they cannot take it until they pass grade 11.

this is the problem with unions in a lot (not all) of workplaces is it protects the lazy.

The Teachers' ….from their side of the fence

I’m curious about a few things……if that’s ok…….

The average grade for the grade 11 teacher is 49% every year for the past 7 years.

Maybe that teacher is tougher….preparing them for a ….tough world. Maybe like courses I experienced, the first year is harder because you are trying to understand the basics and the next year is easier after the basics are understood.

But lets say just for the sake of discussion that it is a difference in teachers. What are the differences? Well it may not be the ‘marks’, it may be the teacher’s way of teaching. This is what, the same as in real life, defines people. There can be very what some would consider bad teachers and average teachers and superb teachers. Many times teachers who are considered bad….meaning tough or demanding of their students….are looked back on many years later as some of the best of teachers. Why do you think some of the toughest (meaning push the kids to do more and achieve more) schools in the world…turn out some of the most educated or knowledgeable people? The difference in ‘teachers’ can be found not only in schools but in professional environments and the military and …..also parents. I had an employee years ago who wanted to come work for me in a specifc area of which he had no real experience, but he said he could do. So I put him to the 'test' and I gave him something to do. He brought it back and I said "no not good enough...do it again". He brought it back again and again I said "not good enough...do it again". Each time he did a poor job I showed him where he was wrong.....but I also left some for him to figure out on his own. This went on for about 8 times until he had it .......perfect! That was 16 years ago and he is still with me and he has trained many people and he is known as the best in the business.....because 'good enough'....isn't the best.

If I had a child in school and they were getting average grades….I would be asking why? There are exams and exams have answers. Chemistry is not literature where there could be 10 answers to one question and they are all correct in some form or another. Chemistry is very precise.

To me, school is like a child playing the violin. Lots of people can play a violin….but only a few understand how to get to perfection.

So without knowing all the real answers as to if one teacher is as you put it 'lazy' or not….I don’t think you can first of all blame the teacher and secondly blame the union. The ‘board’ may have said their hands are tied not because of the union but because of the exams which if I am correct on this have to be approved by the Provincial Board of Education to certain standards of a particular subject. If school boards removed every teacher that some parent didn't like........there would be very few teachers left.

Also I noticed you did not mention talking to the teachers themselves, but you mentioned going to the school board. Wouldn’t it be a good first step to talk to the people that you are making complaints about …..first ……and get their side of the situation before asking for their head on a platter.

actually a group of parents got togethter to discuss it. 1 parent went to talk to the teacher. That sudent was then harrased by te teacher.at that time we went to the pricipal and then the board.

your was a nice story and i am sure you actually paid this guy every single time he did the job incorrectly even though you could not bill the customer for it?

I helped to attempt to secretly organize a union for the employees because they were continually being lied to by head office

Interesting.  I have a similar story.

One of the plants that I worked in was non-union.

The Union attempted to organize the plant employees.  The union tolf them that they would get them more money (our wages and benefits were on par with others in the same industry).  They told the employees they would have the right to choose to strike or not to strike for their plant.

The fact was that our plant was the one hold out in an otherwise completely unionized environment.  The union wanted to get control of the industry and be able to negotiate indusrty-wide contracts.  They also wanted the ability to shut down the whole industry if they decided to strike.  The vote would be industry-wide.  Our small plant could all vote 100% against a strike, and yet the industry would still end up on strike.  The other plants were larger.

In addition, the employees were told that they would get seniority rights.  They already had them.  Everything in the plant was done on senority - overtime, vacations, job postings.  So, the union hadn't even bothered to do their homework.

We offered an option.  We put the employees in touch with a similar size plant that had rejected unions and chosen an employee association.  We were taken to court for "interfering" with the union membership drive.  The judge laughed and threw it out of court.

The result - a functioning employee association that still exists to this day - 24 years later.

P.S. The union broke the law regularly by coming on the property to get membership cards signed.  Guess breaking the law was OK for them.

No it had nothing to do with a customer. It was other work I put together as a test project. You wouldn't understand.

Thanks for the information but I've been in this business for 30 years and it's very successful, with a group of skilled workers who cut no corners and give the customer 101%.

You will never find A in the education system in any country.....and that they ''do not care'' is just another .....assumption.

It is a shame that a group of parents had to get together and only 1 parent went to see the teacher. Only 1? I'm surprised it was not you. Don't you have a GPS?

So no one 'really' knows why the teacher felt that the kids did not deserve higher grades. The teacher never had the 'real' opportunity to explain Eg:....''well here was the test question and this was the correct answer but this is the answer your child gave.''

I think what we may have here are a group of parents who want little Johnny and little Mary to get good grades even though they don't deserve them....and if a teacher isn't living up to the parents expectations then.....GET RID OF THE TEACHER!!!! Just another fast track to entitlement.

No need to answer you back.  I was not looking for an education.  I have expressed my opinion, based on MY knowledge and MY experience.  I stand by it.

When will you be going down to the teachers union office to present those figures?

Don't need to.  There were several teachers in the thread when I posted the numbers.  They did not dispute them.

A ‘majority’ of teachers are like that….not ‘some’…….did you not watch the video? Listen to them. However it is the government who has put them in a position that they have nothing else to use.

I did.  I watched people who were hand picked by the Union to express there positions.  How many teachers spoke on the video.  How amny thousand didn't.  The teachers who disagree with the actions of the union are afraid to speak up.

Unions are highly protective of their viewpoint and practice their version of free speech.  If you disagree with the union, you are free NOT to speak.

What thread was that, I would like to read it and count the number of teachers.

I watched people who were hand picked by the Union to express there positions.

Oh really? Handpicked? Where did it say that…….or are you just assuming? I believe TVO chose them.

The teachers who disagree with the actions of the union are afraid to speak up.

And how do you know that?

Reacting to criticism with anger, shame, or humiliation.

Nope, I only react to racists, bigotry, injustice and ignorance.

Taking advantage of others to reach own goals.

Never have, Never will. I’ve actually been criticized by people for not taking those advantages.

Exaggerating own importance, achievements, and talents.

Nope….any achievements or talents I can back up if some people can find a GPS. Importance?….well I don’t think I am any important than anyone else. Maybe more right in some occasions, but never more important.

Imagining unrealistic fantasies of success, beauty, power, intelligence, or romance. Na….nothing unrealistic.

Requiring constant attention and positive reinforcement from others.

Hardly! As an example I start very few threads…..someone else starts a LOT. Ask anyone who knows me in real life if I need reinforcement….and they will laugh and tell you you’re way wrong!

Becoming jealous easily.

ME! LOL…..oh please!

Lacking empathy and disregarding the feelings of others.

You must be kidding. Do you read what you copy and paste? I’m totally the opposite.

Being obsessed with self.

Wrong again.

Pursuing mainly selfish goals.

Wrong again. I am a river to my people.

Trouble keeping healthy relationships.

Whoa….is that wayyyyyy off.

Becoming easily hurt and rejected.

Seriously…..read before you copy and paste.

Setting goals that are unrealistic.

Nope never have. I’ve achieved all my goals but a few and I’ll fill those eventually.

Wanting "the best" of everything.

Wrong again……sooooo wrong.

Appearing unemotional.

Well when I TCB with someone I can be.

Frankly I think that description is more appropriate for several others.

actually went with test results that he maked incorrect-was told he was the teacher and had a degree not us. was marked incorrect with correct answer as some did their "work" a differnt way than him--the way i was taugt as long as you come up with the correct answer. You have your wires crossed again. In the thread ‘Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff’ …in post 24 it was you that said …. ” guess you did not have time to read the article?? 92% of those THAT VOTED!!! it was NOt a secret ballot each person had to put their name and union # on the ballot! If the union can threaten people ($500 a day fine for not doing as they say) do you really think that those that disagreed would actually vote? really really???”

Bb-cool replied in post 25…. ” Really ??? Did this happen ??? In my experience we have never put our names on an any Union Ballot. Maybe things have changed.”

Following that post I said to bb in post 26…. ” I'll wait as well.” ….meaning I’ll wait for the same reply.

You continued to post ….28, and 36….but ‘you’….. never…….. did answer bb.

So……….you’re a bit confused because it is ‘you’ we are waiting for …..not ‘you’ waiting for me.

Well mikey I agree with you on this. In their own time an individual should not be told what to do. Personally I think that if someone was fined….it would never hold up in a court of law because a union does not control people’s lives 24/7.

That being said however….I also believe that the teachers who chose not to participate in after school activities should also not be condemned because it always was on their ‘own time’.

I think the problem we have here is teachers out of the goodness of their hearts and appreciation for the children have given probably hundreds of thousands of unpaid hours over the years of their own time in activities to help the kids. Maybe it should never have started in the first place because it has got to a point where they are now ‘expected’ to do these activities and they have been taken for granted by both the government and many parents….and many of those parents would never stay at their own jobs without being paid. It’s like the old saying in the military….’never volunteer for anything because they will expect that of you from then on’.

The problems with situations like this is there is the bigger picture and one must ask oneself ‘’do I think of just me….or everyone concerned?’’ It can all be encompassed in one word …….Solidarity. So for a moment forget about the union and the fine and if teachers do these things on their own time. The real question is ….’are you with us or against us’? It’s like many other things in life, a job, a sports team, the military, etc etc….if you don’t want to go along with those you decided at one time to be part of and share in the benefits….then the person absolutely does have that right and they also have the right to.... leave. It’s a lousy position to be in but many times in life that’s part of ….freedom. Been there, done that, got the pink slip.

As for the rest of what you went on about, nothing is missing. There would actually have to be two and that’s virtually impossible for several reasons. You know it and I know it.

Seems fair that the teachers should put in eight hours a day on the limited number of days in the year that they work.  As most put in 5, 5.5 or 6 hours per day of class time, it would seem that two or three hours of extracurricular a week would be a fair request.  Maybe the government went about this the wrong way.  Maybe they should legislate the number of hours a teacher has to work in a year.  To me that would be more than fair.

By the way, last night I talked to a teacher in the guys group I belong to.  He has mixed feelings about the current situation.  He is a basketball nut and now cannot coach his kids.  He said that, if it were not for peer pressure, he would be coaching his team every day.

The Teachers' ….from their side of the fence

One of my pet peeves about our education system is that technology is robbing kids of many basic skills that come in handy in life - such as math.

The teacher I referred to teaches math to grade 7 and 8 students.  I would think he needs to have basic math skills to teach.

For our guys-night-out, we pay a $5 per person activity fee each night - for the rental of the pool, sauna and whirlpool.  Last night there were 18 guys there.  The facilities cost us $40.  He was concerned about the extra money.  After all, we took in $70 and only needed $40.

I said WHAT!  We took in $90.  No, he said, 18 x 5 is 70.  Up until that moment, I was unaware that he taught math.  So, jokingly I said, I hope you don't teach math.  He blushed and said that he did.  His excuse - the kids all use calculators.  If he had a calculator, he would have got it right.

I was shocked.

This morning, I was in a McDonalds.  It was slow, and the manager was going over rounding down or rounding up for the immineny demise of the penny with several employees.  Apparently the cash register does not yet perform this function.  Anyway, it was hilarious.  The three employees that I watched had a lot of trouble with the concept.  The manager gave an example.  The cash register shows that the customers change is $2.37 - how much do you give them?  One girl said $2.00.  The two others were closer and said $2.40.  Of course, the answer is $2.35.

I am sure there are a lot of businesses that are going to have fun tomorrow.

I was in a store before Christmas.  The computer that controls the registers went down.  They did not scan bar codes, so prices were on the items.  They were trying to figure out peoples bills - with a calculator.  It was a disaster.

By the way, we will soon not have to worry about teachers grading papers and giving marks.

The latest movement in the U.S. wants to do away with anything that will possibly make kids feel bad about themselves.  No more failing a grade.  No more test scores.  No more tests.  No more honor roll.  In short, nothing that will cause one student's perfomance against another's.  Don't little Joey to feel bad because Mary got a higher mark.

Do you know how much time they put in at home working on many things for school? Ask that teacher you know.

I get a sense here that there is a new concept emerging based on actual ‘working’ time. It’s beginning to sound like some countries (eg: China) where they monitor all their workers and it becomes ….”well you stopped working for 3 minutes and you were seen just staring out the window so we can either deduct that from your pay or you can stay late and work it off”.

If we are going to base work on things like that then I suggest you start from the ‘top’ down. The PM, all politicians, company CEO’s, police, firemen, construction workers, sales clerks and the list goes on and on.

Maybe in the world that some people seem to increasingly want to live in …..legislating this and that and making more rules and handing out more orders ……then the time has come for in the world of education, if students and parents want more then……….pay for it….or do it yourself.  This is what happens in the real world…..when you push people…….they push back. When you don’t appreciate what people do….then don’t be surprised that they take it away. If you have kids they are being sent to school for an ….education.

He is a basketball nut and now cannot coach his kids. He said that, if it were not for peer pressure, he would be coaching his team every day.

So……tell him if he is that nuts about it…..go to a local gym or to a local outside court (in good weather) and do it! You never know....a game of pickup might turn into a full fledged game. The kids who are equally nuts about it will come.

Any politician that I have known does not short change the voters as far as work is concerned.  Most don't see much of theri families while they are in office.  A good example is Deb Matthews in London.  She has a schedule that would wear out someone half her age.

I once had a boss who was a CEO.  His attitude was that his job came first - at the expense of everything else, including his family.  Most executives are driven to succeed and time is the most valuable commodities they have.

police, firemen, construction workers, sales clerks

I have said here on numerous occasions that cops and fireman are overpaid for what they do.  I have commented about the cops sitting at the rear of the mall next to our apartment building.  I have commented that many fireman get paid a big salary and still manage to work for the LCBO and Brewers Retail stores.   London had (and has) a huge problem with absenteeism amongst their employees.  I see City trucks parked at the WIlliam's Coffee Pub near here - it seems to be their first stop when they leave the yard.  All of these are great examples of jobs that are out of control and need to be reined in.  The teachers are part of a long list.  Private industry is generally successful because they get 40 hours of work for 40 hours of pay.

I think that's what a lot of parents want these days, especially one that comes to mind.

No clue what that means.  I remember a list that was sent home with my son - stuff he needed for the next year at school.  One was a calculator.  I had some major arguments with the principal and the school board.  My son is seven.  He needed to develop math skills, along with every other kid.  Calculators were counter-productive.  My kids were challenged to do their best.  When they stumbled, appropriate help was there.  However, I never stepped in before they stumbled, as failure can teach you good life lessons.
