PayPal Fees Canada to US - G&S vs F&F

I'm quite familiar with fees associated with purchasing from Ebay for goods, but I'm hoping someone can explain why PayPal charges MORE fees to send money from a CAD PP account to a US PP account via F&F? I sent $10 to an American friend from my PayPal balance, and I was charged a $2.99 fee! Is there any way to avoid this?

As sellers we would be more likely to be moving USD to our Canadian bank accounts, than sending money (in either direction) through F&F.

So, I'm wondering if you are overlooking built in fees vs line item fees?

As a business decision, I could see PP charging a fee for what usually would be a one-off transaction, versus constant business transactions.

Its a flat fee they charge for sending money depending on the amount. I don't think it really matters where you send it to. I have sent money to some charities a few times and usually get dinged with fees for doing that. It goes up as I remember sending $20. and got dinged for $4.99. I understand them charging a fee but that's a bit much. That extra $5.00 charge would be better off sent to the charity you are trying to help.

There's no way to avoid it if you are sending money to another country.

Considering that many banks and credit unions charge $1.50–give or take—for an Interac transfer, which is domestic, $3.00 for an international transfer doesn’t seem that bad, especially when you compare that fee to that for a wire transfer.
