Buyer says it costs 140 USD$ to return item

So I have a US buyer who's having trouble using a 500$ item I sold to him and wants to return it.

I paid ~30 CAD$ with UPS to ship the item to him.

He says he went to UPS and it costs 140 USD$ to have the item send back to me...

I told him not to use UPS and use USPS instead - 15 minutes later he says it costs 80 USD$ to send it here.

Any idea what he's doing wrong to get those rates?

It looks like Priority international  is $73.55 US from Arkansas to Quebec City for a 6 kg package. 22”x19”x9”.

You may already know that but figured I would post it to show how expensive USPS Priority International is.

Like femme,  I too just used shippo to create a return label.

I sent the buyer a copy via email and she printed it out no problem.

I used the dimensions from the label I created to ship to the US for the return label.  If you created your original shipping label online the dimensions should be stored with your original label.

The fact that he’s contacting you outside eBay definitely sounds fishy. I’d also tell the buyer to open a return case as suggested by others.

So far all of my buyers contacted me via eBayif they ever had questions.

1 kg = 2.2 pounds so 6 kg = 13.2 pounds, not 12 pounds

I replied to this thread and I'm getting all the notices as it updates but I cannot see my original response. Allow me to reiterate:

1. Strongly encourage this buyer to open his Return Request via ebay. Don't proceed with any refunds, partial or provide postage labels until he does so.

2. Once the ebay case is open, send him a return postage label for International Priority via USPS via Shippo. You have the product dimensions and weight, instruct the buyer he is to use the package in which it was sent to him and mark it clearly 'Return Merchandise' and that failure to do so will compromise his 'timely' refund. (It won't, but telling him that might get his attention. You can claim back any mistakes made with taxes on import for Returns directly through the government. It is, however, time-consuming and ties up your cash until it's resolved.)

3. Stop responding to his queries to your email or phone except to say, "Please open your case via ebay or paypal'.

4. You need to do everything by the book with this return request. I see at least one red flag, maybe two, which as a seller would make me proceed with this case with extreme caution.

Come back for advice on next steps when you need it. Good luck.

USPS Expedited International is cheaper.

You're right. I was using 14 lbs to figure it out as the price for 13.2 lbs is the same as 14 lbs.

Do you mean USPS Priority Express International?

It is more expensive. Priority is $73.55, Priority Express is $110
