Nonfiction books, Subject, Topic and Cassini..

It used to be that nonfiction books were divided by Subject  and then by Topic within Subject....  and the Subject-Topic categories were visible on eBay in the left navigation column..

Today  nonfiction books are no longer divided by Subject  and listed by Subject  followed by Topic within Subject within a search report.

At first it was thought that this was a glitch... However,  this is the new reality on eBay.

Several searches were completed within nonfiction books on eBay.com.

A discussion was put up today... and for anyone interested in what will soon be available on eBay.ca.

A link to that discussion.....

Nonfiction books, Subject, Topic and Cassini..

Cumos -- I've read your posts in the link you noted here - a very interesting discussion of the topic.  I thought one statement you made was a particularly good description of what we can soon expect to see everywhere on eBay:

"With Cassini  it is like a buyer stepping up to a counter and asking Cassini… What do you have for me….

Several searches later, a list of possibilities is presented.."

This is an apt comparison, and it is the way many online sites are now "targeting" users -- and not just sites that involve selling.  It's a complete shift in approach.  In fact, I would add that not only is it like a buyer stepping up to just any counter, but a counter with his name plaque on it!  There is a psychological appeal about this sort of thing that is almost irresistible.

Rather than leaving it to the user to search for what he/she wants, an array of items is summoned up based on an individual's recent history of browsing, searching and buying on the site. The more one browses, searches and purchases, presumably the more and more perfectly aligned the items will be to the user's personal tastes and interests.

As I've theorized on other threads, my strong belief is that this new search paradigm, in combination with the "Feeds" that we now see on the main eBay landing page (which I'm sure must be linked with Cassini), will lead to a state where buyers may not bother doing searches once they've been using the site for a few months.  Those "Feeds" can be mezmerizing and extremely appealing for the very reason that they seem to have been created only for you, by some genie in a bottle.  Think about that -- there is a reason they've chosen the word "Feed".

This, in my opinion, is going to be one of the most drastic changes sellers will see on eBay.  It may mean that searches will be more or less a thing of the past, and saleability will no longer depend upon capturing buyers' attention who are deliberately seeking your products, but rather getting into the grab-bag that matches their interests.  The fewer people on eBay who search for, and/or buy in a particular sub-category, the less frequently that sub-category of items will be displayed.  Sellers will have to change the way they list and describe their goods.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that, if it doesn't already do so, Cassini will also be able to prioritize the items presented, based on a buyer's purchasing history and watching predilections...and my guess is that ultimately those "Feeds" will become the way many people buy on eBay.  How will that impact an individual seller's visibility is anybody's guess at the moment.

I should add that, once Cassini is rolled out everywhere on eBay, all sellers are more or less in the dark about how to interact and jostle for visibility.

This will create a level playing field for a while, not for long, but careful observation, deduction and experimentation will be the key to adapting successfully.  I think probably keeping on top of eBay's policies and maintaining high selling standards generally will also help.  Who really knows at this point?  I think "new" eBay won't be viable for every seller.

Nonfiction books, Subject, Topic and Cassini..

I do research on eBay on some of the used items I sell as do many sellers. Not at all things I am interested in buying since I am selling them. I find it amusing when I go to the eBay home page and see items presented to me based on recent searching for items I am selling.

Even more interesting is when someone posts in the forums some issues they are having and I go and browse their listings and look at a few. My main eBay page shows me whatever I was looking recently at from dresses to CD's to trading cards to books.

With such a variety of items searched and items viewed, I have given Cassini a lot of different and unrelated data, LOL. GIGO = Garbage In, Garbage Out.

The individual seller won't matter. This is what the TRS chasing sellers do not get. They think there is a value in TRS and that they will be more visible and get better sales. They won't. eBay doesn't care who the buyer buys from, they just care that the buyer, buys.

Cassini, I "think" will be as Rose postulates, a living breathing thinking thing.

Had an intetersting thing happen last night. I had three widgets, up for a few months, that were missing a word in the title. Rendered them non-searchable. Right, one word. Anyway, I revised all three adding the word and then I did "sell similar" for two more.

This morning, the two I freshly listed were at the top of the page, I am not a TRS, the three that I had revised were at the bottom of the page. So? Maybe? I should rotate my listings?

Buyers will see what is most applicable to their search with best match first. They can re-filter after that. How many do?

Nonfiction books, Subject, Topic and Cassini..

It is my understanding that Cassini remembers.

and

One has to start a new search... in the beginning... and then Cassini starts a completely new search.....

The search cannot remember forever... there must always be a starting point....

Each new search is when you start at that "counter" with a new set of search words....  and the listings  start as one big mass of listings.

For sellers there will be a period of  learning how to use Subject and Topic effectively...

If the seller knows what to do... the buyer will have more to choose from....

It is the reality of Cassini

---------------------------

Initially I was confused about the removal of Subject and Topic for nonfiction books....  Yet now it  is viewed as a logical progression..

Many sellers will be confused , and will need some tutoring....

and many will complain about how things have been messed up beyond repair.

One has to be careful.

The basics of Cassini may be the same for all listings on eBay.

However,  there may be subtle variations among major categories....

--------------------------------------------------

I now know what to do to list non-fiction books  in relation to Cassini.

The only problem right now is that the old search is still working on eBay.ca, while Cassini is functional on eBay US.

I will not be able to make a full adjustment to meet the needs of Cassini until Cassini comes to eBay Canada....
