Should eBay be calculating final value fees on final totals or subtotals?

Just did a sale after the July date for Canadian sales tax being implemented on eBay and I looked at the fee breakdown.

I'm a little curious, from a logical standpoint as to should eBay be calculating the subtotal of the final value fee on the final cost (sale price + shipping + sales tax)? It seems a little weird to me to charge the seller a fee on the tax the buyer paid, and then throw on HST/GST on that for the final seller fee.

Just found that interesting.

Re: Should eBay be calculating final value fees on final totals or subtotals?

It is Standard Practice in the financial industry to charge fees on the payment not on the individual parts of the payment, because what the fee is for is processing the money .

Since Managed Payments processes Internet Sales Taxes along with shipping costs and purchase costs (as well as the 30c non-refundable service fee) the fees are on the entire payment.

This has been the Standard Practice since we got our first merchant credit card account back in the early 80s. We didn't like it then either.

Most any selling site charges its fees on the TOTAL transaction and that includes the T-O-T-A-L of all costs incurred to the seller

+Thanks for your input--you have been here for a long time ,with small sales as I can see,so this is a hobby for you,and to try to be Obikanowbi, your advise is apriciated , but the point some of us makes is yes they charge that,is it right though? I SAY NOT as they tax you now, then when you mail your item they tax you again, and at the END OF THE YEAR YOU HAVE TO CLAIM YOUR INCOME and they tax you the 3rd time on the same fricken thing--Think about it 1946(your Birthday? that is? so you must be wise but not so smart "TRIPLE DIPPING FROM SELLERS" now if your Highness, just put the rule book aside, like most judges in court can't have common sense when they rule ,they have to use their law book and no common sense ,I take it, but most of us have commen sense we can think out of the bubble---and NO IT IS NOT RIGHT TO DOUBLE DIPP FOR TAXING, Now if Your Highness -the Wise one --tells me we can claim all tax deduction that Ebay took from us, that we made for Government and we can get some back than I stand corrected-but if not -DO NOT JUST SAY Something that you are justifying these kind of deductions 3 times over, I read lot of your comments before with that other Gent (no longer here) use to sell stamps) I swear you two were married with your same "unjustified commens " if I wasn't here from the beginning you could tell me things --but sorry I do not agree with you --and I don't have to --as we are still free speech I hope?--- but I am sure you will find something against free speech also --so let me havce it I can take it --all grown up--Thank you Sincerely John

Re: Should eBay be calculating final value fees on final totals or subtotals?

Hi Femmefan1946 also if you stating you had to pay this since the 80'S? "NOT" Ebay had Pay Pal they changed over to save us money?? well??? I see nothing just increases since then!!! for the worst and not for the better -there is more scamming going on here then ever before-and before yourhighness tells me to leave if I don't like it, as you can see I do just fine and have experience to grow with scammers and the likes of them, people who wins auctions then after they tell you to give them discount on shipping? see my feedback this is what sellers deal with now days , but you no worry you just play it safe and keep selling 10 items a month , and keep telling us it is still better than any other place -I agree that is why I am here and will be long as I can--but don't justify the taxes that we pay 3 times on a sale!!!!!

Re: Should eBay be calculating final value fees on final totals or subtotals?

the only guarantees in life are DEATH anmd TAXES

The only guarantees on eBay: The platform is a place to list and sell in accordance to eBay's rules and policies for THEIR site; and those rules and policies of which eBay is bound to by LAW...

C'est la vie!

Que sera, sera...

Re: Should eBay be calculating final value fees on final totals or subtotals?

You are using the Services of a Corporation and you agreed to A-L-L the Terms and Conditions of that site...

The Fees and Taxes you pay are on the TOTAL of the WHOLE Transaction as it is on most ALL Marketplace Facilitators, Amazon, Etsy, et all...

You could always use Kijiji or Fracebook, but the CRA also has its eyes on those for future intervention...

Re: Should eBay be calculating final value fees on final totals or subtotals?

We had a B&M shop on the Sparks Street Mall in Ottawa from 1978 until 2014 when we retired.

We got our first merchant credit card account then and Moneris, the payment processor for Chargex and MasterCard, charged us fees on the entire payment.
