The best way to ship $1K - $10k item from Canada to US / Canada

Would like to sell a few personal collections. Each item is approximately 0.1kb, 11x8x2 dimensions, around $1k - $10k

I would like to insure the package ($1K - $10K). The maximum coverage for Canadapost is only $1k.

So what are my options besides CP?

You are an experienced seller, so you are less likely to encounter a scammer than a newbie foolishly selling high value items at the beginning of his eBay adventure.

We have a public auction that runs with a floor, telephone, mail and fax bidding as well as live internet bidding.

This is our last catalogue.

https://sparks-auctions.com/auction-34/catalogues/

On Monday we shipped a consignment to the auction in Ottawa with a value of $15K. We used Canada Post Expedited.

We normally use stamps for shipping, but for anonymity, we used a shipping label, purchased at the Post Office. Not the postal outlet, although ours is very reliable with a long serving staff.

We also put the receiver's name as Sparks, instead of Sparks Auctions.

When the auction is shipping to buyers, they vary between Canada Post and FedEx.

They use mostly Expedited, but also ExpressPost and for very high value international sales, Priority Post.

From time to time they use FedEx, but not only does FedEx not delivery in many non-urban areas, but they are sneaky about customs.

They will hand over the parcel and bill the import fees (duty, sales taxes, and their own $25+ service fee) later. If the buyer refuses to pay, since he didn't know about those fees when he accepted the parcel, FedEx comes after the sender.

Tyler has assured us that buying Signature Confirmation, which most carriers are not actually collecting because : workplace safety, will be considered the same as getting Signature Confirmation.

There is a limit to payments via Paypal. I'm not sure what that limit is-- perhaps $5,000?

There's a lot to be said for local selling and cash payment. But your market is obviously larger with eBay and five figure transactions are not unusual here.

Since these are low weight but high value items you should use FedEx or UPS EXPRESS service. In addition you should probably handle (be responsible for) US customs clearance. Shipments over US$2500 require a formal customs entry that may cost you a bit of money but it's better than having the recipient handle this aspect.

Customs clearance fees for shipments under US$2500 are included in Express shipments but any duty/taxes are not. Again to avoid issues with a buyer you should indicate to the courier that you are responsible for these. If need be you can figure out in advance what those taxes would be and collect that amount from your buyer.
