Hi cwcollins,
So that we can check into this, please provide the exact error message you are receiving. Please also provide the category you are selecting as well as the item you are looking up for prefilled information.

Try changing the description of the item slightly.
For example, I sell books and often non-US editions will not show when the ISBN is entered. So I enter the title and author instead. Quite often, the foreign edition, ISBN and all, then appears.
If not, the text box often has publication information instead, possibly gathered from my description.
Mainly though, while Item Specifics do help you with Search, you also have 80 keystrokes in your title and those are equally important.

A catalogue is available for many categories on eBay...
For some categories it is mandated that all sellers use the catalogue.
The eBay catalogue is an option for books.. Much, if not all of the catalogue is based on the ISBN number. In the history of book publishing this number is relatively new.......Consequently there is a major group of books published where there is no catalogue entry available,.
and... sometimes the ISBN number just might be wrong on the book... Or the ISBN number is wrong on the back cover of the book or dust jacket, but right on the backside of the title page, or vice versa , or even elsewhere in the book, such as the front or back flap of the dust jacket.... It does happen....
A seller should only use the catalogue if the information is an exact match to the book being listed.
The seller is responsible for what is put in a listing... An error in the catalogue can put the book on eBay with the wrong description . and... sometimes the book ends up in the wrong category on eBay.
Examples... Michael Jordan ends up under ........ Ice Hockey....
or a books about the Canadian Army in Belgium during World War II ends up in ....Physical Fitness/Well-bring.
If one looks in the User agreement.... it is stated that sellers should use the catalogue for books, or any other category, only if the information in the catalogue is correct to the item being listed.
From the User Agreement.....
For the convenience of sellers, we may offer catalogues of stock images, descriptions and product specifications that are provided by third parties (including eBay users). You may use catalogue content solely in connection with your eBay listings during the time your listings are on eBay's sites.
While we try to offer reliable data, we cannot promise that the catalogues will always be accurate and up-to-date, and you agree not to hold our catalogue content providers or us responsible for inaccuracies in catalogues. If you choose to include catalogue content in your listings, you continue to be fully responsible for your listings and for ensuring that your listings are accurate, do not include misleading information, and comply with this User Agreement and all eBay policies.
The catalogues may include copyrighted, trademarked or other proprietary materials. You agree not to remove any copyright, proprietary or identification markings included with the catalogues or create any derivative works based on catalogue content (other than by including them in your listings).
----------------------------------------------------------------
For books it is the responsibility of a seller to list that book correctly... Use a catalogue with care...and understanding.
Do not use it blindly with the hope that it provides a potential buyer with an understanding of the content of a book... or any other item with a catalogue available....
The catalogue can be wrong....
