A Petition Regarding The Aboriginals In Canada

I'd like to see the natives "signatures" for that Manhatten purchase.  At that time it was war for land.  Even among aboriginals themselves.  How do you suppose the owners of Manhatten Island aquired that land?  What gave them the right to sell it to the Dutch?  Do you think they thought of the previous tribe?  What purchase?  I'll bet the Dutch keep the only copy.

The indians that sold the land to the Dutch had the losing tribe for lunch.

How many copies of these treaties exist, and who has them? They didn't have photocopiers or FAX machines in 1750, so I suspect there's only one original. If held by the government, perhaps they could, ahem, lose it a la Nixon 🙂

Harper can declare bankruptcy and offer to pay the First Nations pennies on the dollars owing.

He may not have to declare it.  If governments keep spending the way they are, someone else may force us into bankruptcy.

They repudiated the Selkirk Treaty and interfered with settlers and surveyors

So, it is OK for the Natives to break treaties - just wanted to get that straight,

This is also another reason that so much is spent by the First Nations people and the Canadian taxpayer on legalities.

That, and bail.

Contras? 1960's???

The contras is a label given to the various rebel groups opposing the Sandinista Junta of National Reconstruction government in Nicaragua that were active from 1979 through to the early 1990s.

to ensure the next generation of aboriginal Canadians do not grow up in poverty.

The petition is not anti-native as some have intrepreted it.  When I read it, I saw that it contained some suggestions of how the Canadian Government might deal with the overall issue.  I believe that it is a call for the government to act to resolve a problem that needs to be resolved - and needs to be resolved now.

The petition calls for an end to a system that has not worked in the past and will not work in the future.  It recognizes that the system has failed the aboriginal problem as well as the taxpayers.

It DOES NOT say that we shouldn't give the natives more money.  It says that under the current system, we will continue to pay forever and still not benefit anyone.

If the 'system' was handled the way it should be there would be no problems. The governments are corrupt.

I don’t often do this, but as I read that bloggers site I got as far as ….”First Nations are heavily subsidized by Canadian taxpayers”…..and read no further. If someone writing about the Native people thinks they are ‘subsidized’ and does not know it is ‘their’ money…..then the person is truly uneducated.

However, just to be fair I did go back to see who the writer was and read her bio. I found it interesting that she treasures animals and the environment. (rather hypocritical considering she is supporting those who have no qualms about destroying both for money) Then I read the title of another posting by her called Me Heap Big Injun (a totally defamatory title). Then I read another comment by her “Imagine the Indians to be a crying baby.- Imagine the rest of the population to be a strong, well-armed adult.”  That blogger’s elevator does not go to the top floor and why anyone would use her blog site as an example of anything, short of ignorance, is beyond me.

Casinos are interesting. I do not however believe it is the way to go for the Native people and some Chiefs, Reserves and the people on them are intelligent enough to feel the same way. Gambling can be fun….it can also be addictive and very destructive to people, families and societies. It is not something that I believe First Nations people should get themselves involved in.

So you’re probably thinking….”oh Mr. Prude”. You would be wrong, so let me save you the time and trouble. Since the days of high school where I use to shoot pool every night and often for a bill a point (that’s a hundred dollars for the uninitiated), to the countless nights and days I use to play poker and blackjack in private hotel rooms, to the day when casinos came into Ontario and I’ve played and stayed at everyone of them……I have learned two things……gambling isn’t for everyone and those it is not for it destroys their lives......and the house always wins. I did Very well, I always do, but I know a never-ending list of people who did not. I could go into a lot more detail and real life examples, but it would be too lengthy. As for the First Nations people, to go into this line of endeavour is once again just playing into the hands of those who attempted to destroy them previously. There are far too many better things to get involved with in life that are more productive, long lasting and give a true feelings of pride and accomplishment.

It seems to me that it is simply saying It's not working .. Wheter it's what the goverment is doing or it is what the natives are doing it is just saying it is time to find a new way of doing things

If the First Nations people got all the money they deserved from government and big business and if they were not tied down by many regulations imposed on them by the government (Natives can not even start a business on a Reserve without government approval) …..then they would be much further ahead.

I am not thinking Oh Mr. Prude - what I am thinking is that you seem to think that you know better than the Natives that are already running Casino's in Canada.  Between that and the suggestion that Natives shouldn't own property in case someone gets jealous I am wondering what you really feel about Natives.

I am going back a lot of years when i spent a couple of years just outside Penticton working as a bartender for a summer job.

Aboriginals would usually block the road leading to Apex Alpine, not sure if they still do.

I thought this would be a great business opportunity for the reserve. Drive through fast food restaurant, ski shop, native craft shop. Then again maybe the reserve didn't want that.

Then again, maybe there are businesses there now.
