A Petition Regarding The Aboriginals In Canada

Aside from treaties I can see people signing this petition because well we didn't take anything our ancestors did

True, but we all live in a land which had agreements with the Native people. If you had of been told about this before you moved here, or when you were born here, would you have moved to a country with no treaties?

I mean everything you say is true but if we based everything on the past what kind of future would we have...

Do you mean that as we meaning ‘you and me’?…..or were you generalizing meaning people such as the Natives? If you mean you and me then for the most part I have no real complaints, with the exception of some polticians that have to be kept an eye on. As for the Native people please refer to my previous post about what lives some people prefer to live. But it is also more than that. Here’s an article for you and others to read……. http://www.mediacoop.ca/blog/dru/15493   it might explain more.

So on one hand the Natives like their land and freedom and many seriously consider themselves the caretakers of the land and also there is the financial value of the land and the resources…..resources that long ago when the treaties were signed the Crown didn’t care about or did not realize it would be that important. I see you sell DVD’s. If just hypothetically for some reason you had some DVD’s and lets say you also had an agreement with someone and that person or business had a signed agreement to buy only DVD’s from you. Then suddenly a particular DVD became worth a LOT of money…..you would consider it a windfall. However the person or company you had the agreement with decided they wanted to change the agreement so they could get that DVD at a bargain basement price. Would you change the agreement? Probably ……no. Then the company said they were going to find a way to get that DVD from you. Would you fight that? Probably yes! Welcome to the world of the First Nations people.

You think Naties would be happy if we gave them land and money but took away everything all other cultures bring to the table .. I don't think so.. Take away the telephone,T.v, Vehicles and leave them with there land and money and I would bet within 1 hr of that annoucement you would have a whole new protest on your hands.

Well to begin with you can’t give them land or money….because it is their land and money in the first place. If you in some way decided that there was a way to eliminate telephones and TV signals and vehicles then go for it….and deal with the people who sell them to the Native people. But also keep in mind that if that were to be done, the Native people could shut off the taps in many areas that we take for granted and as the one Chief said….they can shut down Canada’s economy very easily.  Of course the government could bring in the army etc etc and then Canada would be on the same list with Syria.

They may be short changed but compared to any and all other Culture who have been through alot less and alot more they get way more then any other culture and this is very true wheter it is enough or not enough or being spent on stupid things or being used very wisely They get alot more then other culture who have suffered.

I always enjoy comparisons like that…….everything from….. “when I went to school I had to walk 2 miles in the snow, up hills and down hills and in my father’s pyjamas….so what are you complaining about”!!…..to …..”this group over here suffered this much so you should be happy with less”.  That’s illogical and bordering on a form of Communism. It’s no different than saying if person A has a two bedroom home and a 4 cylinder car then everyone should be happy with that……no suffering required.

Also who is to say what is stupid or wise spending? I have my own purchases of items that I have spent good money on and some people think it is something they would never do. I know a fellow who collects antique buses and another man with three drive sheds full of his collection of …..washing machines! A lady I know spends her money on collecting ….door knobs (no she was not on Bewitched!) I have never bought a new car….to me it’s a waste of money….I prefer buying used and in good shape. Others will without blinking an eye go out and buy a new 60 thousand dollar pickup. I have learned in life….each to their own….it’s their life……Native people included.

I remember about 15 years ago an old couple who lived in a dilapidated small old farmhouse. Driving by most people would think it was deserted but no….two very nice people lived in it….in the summer. Their land was leased out for a good price and they made I suppose a decent living because every winter….they went to Florida. Certain people felt the couple was not living right, or the way they 'should be'. They called the department of health and they discovered there was nothing wrong with the house. Then the people tried to have the couple declared incompetent. They were very competent….so that idea failed as well. Who was it that wanted them to leave the land and the house torn down and even the couple put in a nursing home?………….their son. He wanted the land and what it was worth. Not much different than the Native people when others say they should move….leave the land….move into the white society….change their lives……renegotiate the treaties. Why? Because someone else wants the land and what is on and under it. But alas, the Native people are no longer the Native people of over a century and more ago who might have been easily duped. They done gone went and got educated and with each generation ……stronger.

Here’s the deal brand, it’s really simple. Keep the agreements with the Native people and they’ll keep their agreements. Everyone can live happily ever after. Would keeping the treaties harm your world or that of the average Canadian in any way? Not really….except maybe for the greedy or the racists in Canada…..but that’s their problem.

I never got into timelines with her that I can remember, I felt it was the late 60's based on the era of clothing her and her girlfriend were wearing. I was more interested in what she had to say and what there was to learn. If you would like to be introduced to her just drop down here and I'll take you to meet her. She's a very interesting lady. It's about an hour and half trip from my place to where she is in Sarnia. Being as you like trees etc I'll also show you the assorted species in the Morris Tract.

I wast just returning the favour of being told that my memory of events isn't as accurate as the actual words captured on a screenshot saved to a computer!  Just sayin'.    And with so many memories of so many conversations with so many people it must get terribly confusing for you at times.

No not confusing at all. When you tell the truth, you don't have to remember much. I've never been good remembering names so that can be a problem and I may not remember if someone drove a 64 Chev or a 65 Chev many years after an event, but generally speaking my memory is fine. It's hard to forget a cute woman of that time posing with armed men in a jungle while she is wearing a constrictor. I have forgotten when she was in the Vatican and when she was in Tibet.

I was looking at something just the other day from an Internet forum I use to go to and there was a discussion about theft from a car. Someone came in and said "it must have been a Native". Now in the media article there was no mention of Native people. It wasn't a theft in a Native area. The police never mentioned 'Native'. The items stolen were valuable so 'anyone' could have stolen them.....why mention 'Native'.....it made no sense, other than he was expressing some deeper problem. However there was a woman in that forum who was a Native and the man was asked politely by several other people to apologize to the woman. He refused and did it in words I cannot use here. But suffice to say he added to his first mistake, like adding fuel to a fire. Such an interesting and sometimes sad world.

I remember very clearly the incident you just described.

Some dates and events just get fixed in one's memory, and will stay there for a long time, maybe forever. Like where I was, (Gravenhurst, ON)  and what I was doing (tree work; large crack willows) on 9/11.

As far as that incident goes, I regret seeing it happen.  I did not believe it was a racist remark in the context it was said in that particular thread.  Nor did I, or do I believe the individual that said what he said is a racist.  My "gut" feeling is that it was a flippant remark and nothing more.  Sometimes it is possible to misinterpret what someone has said.  Either deliberately, or accidently.  Like when something is said in jest, or sarcastically, and it is interpreted as literal.  Nobody can control how someone is going to interpret  what they read.  The emoticons only go so far...

So, I got really mad when the Mob went after the "racist".  And I said that I was a racist, proud to be a racist, a descendent of a long line of White European racists who disembarked on the shores of North America to pillage, etc, etc.   A "true confession"?  Hardly.  I don't believe I am a racist anymore than a caterpillar is a frog.

During the time that I've been on CTS I've made a couple of friends and enemies, seen some people leave voluntarlly, or with assistence, seen some get fed up and confine their posts to just one thread.  This board ain't what it used to be, and it sure ain't what it could be if everyone, including me could just make a little more of an effort to get along.

To be honest yes I would have if I could have still given my family a good life .. It would be more money in my pocket .. Personally I don't care what your history is unless your sick or old I think you deserve 0 of my money ...

I mean everything you say is true but if we based everything on the past what kind of future would we have...

Do you mean that as we meaning ‘you and me’?…..or were you generalizing meaning people such as the Natives? I mean everyone but  Imagine the new generation of natives all of a sudden got all the land and money they can handle but lost all rights to have anything made by any other culture because they decided all the matters is the land ... Would not be pretty .. Same goes for other cultures but in Canada and US they are really the only other culture fighting the fight and of course due to treaties and for good reason but are still the only ones ..

So on one hand the Natives like their land and freedom and many seriously consider themselves the caretakers of the land and also there is the financial value of the land and the resources…..resources that long ago when the treaties were signed the Crown didn’t care about or did not realize it would be that important. Circumstanstle situation but put it this way If my family was suffering I wouldn't be waiting for anyone to give me anything or spend years tied up in dcourt to win a contract or agreement well my family was living in a shack or hungry.. Now if I had no family to worry about I would fight yes but like I said if I had a family I would drop the dvd business and the contract and find another way to support that family even if it was against my way of life and my beliefs because above all I believe if you make a family you need to be ready to do everything and anything to provide and give them a good life ...

always enjoy comparisons like that…….everything from….. “when I went to school I had to walk 2 miles in the snow, up hills and down hills and in my father’s pyjamas….so what are you complaining about...

First that is not what I am comparing it too ... Genocides like Rwanda. burning of 1000 of jews, hang of African Americans the stuff that is in the history books that yuou live and die by .. My complaint is really straight forward people will only suffer as much as they let themselves If you think the only way to make your life better and to feed your family is to fight with harperyou need to give your head a shake...

I don't care what anyone says This whole things is made to look like it is about saving the land and the way of life and the trees but that is just a politicals stand point it I think is more about money housing etc. but this is just my opinion ..I think once the chiefs and elders past the new generation care more about cell phones and ipads then they do fishing, hunting and trees  again just an opinion ....

This petition is nothing more than inflammatory racist ranting that I would never sign.

At the same time, in all seriousness, to go back through history and right every wrong since the beginning of time by means of financial restitution by various groups of descendants to other groups of descendants is, well - I don't think you would ever deplete the synonyms of ridiculous in describing this concept...

This wonderland where somehow every bit of land on the planet has an original "owner" and has then been duly transferred to succeeding owners whether by just and legal treaty or transaction is totally absurd.

No court of any kind could ever legitimately sort out even a miniscule fraction of of this question. Just think of the nuances of  national "sovereignty" vs "private ownership" vs say "kingdoms" and "empires", won, lost, inherited, subverted, or stolen, etc. All the shades of serfdom, slavery and bondage, the massive institutionalized thievery practiced by the churches over the centuries... it would go on and on.

Many, if not most, Canadians would literally be required to pay restitution to their own families and relatives from now until time immemorial.

There - just made debating opponents of everyone on both sides of this discussion :-).

We are stuck with the status quo... But that's not to say we can't improve things.

Great post Art, well said. The future is now not 200 years ago!

Can't believe I agreed with Art. Must be there is no CO² in the post!

A Petition Regarding The Aboriginals In Canada

I'm not sure you fully understand art. This is not restitution, unless you consider restitution similar to paying rent. In history in many cases, countries were 'overthrown' by other countries...aka war. Was that right what was done by the invaders? No. Was it right that innocent people's land and lives were taken? No. Did those once living human beings have a right, a human right, to live a full and happy life without being terrorized by outside forces? Yes.

However I do agree with you that most of the planet and many people faced the greed of others and that was.... longggggg ago. You would think we would have learned by now. No longer is theft and greed done at the end of a spear or a gun....now it's done with a pen.

You also said ...."but that's not to say we can't improve things". This also is true and to improve anything we must first start with recognizing what was done to others in the past and then move on to Never letting it happen again.

Now in Canada it was slightly different. When the Europeans came to Canada they certainly took advantage of the Native people and cheated them and even murdered them. There is one tribe where I am originally from, Newfoundland, who were totally obliterated and are now extinct. The white man even put a bounty on their heads as if they were an animal. As the invaders gained more land the Natives can be at least thankful that treaties were enacted by England to pay the Native people for the use of the land and the resources taken from it. At the time of course the resources were things like wood and fur and fish etc. Look at Canada as a mall, and people came into the mall and rented space. Now they have to pay the landlord. Strangely this concept  seems to be not only allowed but applauded in our capitalistic society and it existed long before N. America was even discovered. So, treaties were made and now the landlord wants the renters to live up to them. However the renters who themselves rent on a daily basis in their own world, they no longer want to pay rent and also want to change the agreements. Once again, greed has raised it’s ugly head. The First Nations people never gave up Canada, it’s still theirs. Where they made their mistake is being too friendly and believing that the white man would be fair and just.... which is how they ran their society.

In the USA the white man was neither fair or just and Native men, women and children were slaughtered and their land stolen. But in Canada…there was those treaties.

Now I am not sure what world some people live in but in my world you keep to an agreement. Even if at some later date you find that the content of the agreement means that you personally aren’t benefiting as much as you would like…….you still stick to it. I have a business in which I have contracts with people and there have been times where a job has taken longer or for some reason has become more complicated. I have actually had customers say to me “how much extra do I owe you”…..and my response has always been…..”I made an agreement with you for this price and I stick to it”. I had a job a couple of years ago and I made virtually nothing on it. Complicated story but the end was I kept my promises originally made to the person I had the contract with. I can sleep at night knowing my integrity is in tact. I learned that lesson in life from my father, who on the day he was buried people said that he was the most upright man and trustworthy man they had ever met. Greed....my father didn't even know the word.

What escapes me is people who want agreements kept with them, from an exchange policy at a store, to a contractor working on their home, to a government that made promises and anything else in life…..can often turn around and shaft other people. Basically to the same to others that whey would never want done to them.

I don’t care if the agreements with the Native people were 10 years ago or 400 years ago……..you stick with them. People who came to this country and people who were born in this country …..someone should have told them….they’re renting. I know this comes as a shock to a lot of people but that’s just the way it is. The Native people of Canada are given money for the use of  THEIR land from the Crown and the government within Canada controls and passes on that money to the Native people. These are not handouts….this is rent….and the politicians in the government are no more than the bank. That part of the treaties people should be glad of….because the government gets to use and benefit from that money before the Native people get it.

So this is really simple…….it’s human beings and their greed that make it complicated. You live in a vast country, the second largest in the world. You have a good life (far better than others), You live well and eat well. Your children have a good education and freedom (well mostly). You have big cities and wonderful open spaces and mountains and water and all sorts of other resources that make Canada a wealthy country. All these things that people have and yet....for some reason…………….it’s not enough!

The treaty covered the tract described as follows:

"Beginning at the International boundary line near its junction with the Lake of the Woods, at a point due north from the centre of Roseau Lake; thence to run due north to the centre of Roseau Lake; thence northward to the centre of White Mouth Lake, otherwise called White Mud Lake; thence by the middle of the lake and the middle of the river issuing therefrom, to the mouth thereof in Winnipeg River; thence by the Winnipeg River to its mouth; thence westwardly, including all the islands near the south end of the lake, across the lake to the mouth of the Drunken River; thence westwardly, to a point on Lake Manitoba, half way between Oak Point and the mouth of Swan Creek; thence across Lake Manitoba, on a line due west to its western shore; thence in a straight line to the crossing of the Rapids on the Assiniboine; thence due south to the International boundary line; and thence easterly by the said line to the place of beginning."

It provided for the reservation of tracts of land sufficient to furnish 160 acres of land to each family of five; a present of $3 per head and payment of an annuity of $3 per head.

To follow the wording of this treaty each Indian would get $3.00 per year.    That is about $3000.00 for this reserve per year.   I would think that this amount is paid many times over  each year.

I'd like to see the natives "signatures" for that Manhatten purchase.  At that time it was war for land.  Even among aboriginals themselves.  How do you suppose the owners of Manhatten Island aquired that land?  What gave them the right to sell it to the Dutch?  Do you think they thought of the previous tribe?  What purchase?  I'll bet the Dutch keep the only copy.
