As a buyer: Is it OK to try to "negotiate" with American sellers if you would like to get the cheapest shipping option available ?

Many times I passed over making  bids on pulps or other magazines when the ( usually American ) seller quotes $50 for shipping in a box about 2.6 kilograms ( sometimes I'd ask them if they could ship the merchandise in two or more envelopes for cheaper postage...usually no go though )

I know as a buyer i can't "twist their arm"  to get the lowest postage but on this forum I often read that many American sellers do not  always acquaint themselves  with the various shipping options for Canada, or  else the USPS site prominently displays the most expensive USA to Canada shipping service.

It is ok to ask politely although some sellers might not reply if they do not want to change the shipping and some might not agree to change...that is their decision to make.

It is a good idea though to look at the USPS site so that you know if there are less expensive options available. For example, 4 lbs (approx 1.5kg) is the maximum weight for first class international so  a 2.6 kg box would have to be sent using priority international. A small medium flat rate box is about $41 and a large flat rate box is $54 so in some cases, the seller's shipping cost might already be the least expensive possible.

A polite enquiry is never a problem.

But your seller may want to have Delivery Confirmation on the parcel and, weight and dimensions aside, that service cross-border starts around $20-25.

So check the USPS website as suggested.
