Buyer asking for partial refund! What to do?

I sold a pair of Adidas track pants that were listed as "brand new/never worn" for $38.90. The buyer has complained to me three times since she bought them. First time she asked me why she hasn't received the item one week after it being shipped, and when I told her they would arrive in 12 business days, she complained "Wow, I mean I get things faster from China! Are these coming by pony? I hope they are not lost. You charged a lot for shipping. i guess that is shipping and handling? But I didn't see it labeled that way. I think it would have only cost five dollars to ship this by priority with tracking." Is she kidding, I have NEVER heard of $5 priority shipping and I charged the exact same amount that I paid Canada Post. Plus, she knowingly purchased this with standard shipping, which clearly states that it takes up to 12 business days. After she received them, she complained about pillings on the back and told me they were not new. Then she said that she'd like to keep them, but since they are not worth what she paid she would like a discount. I received the pants as a gift so I assumed they were new and didn't inspect them carefully, which was definitely a mistake on my part, so I apologized and asked her to send me a picture of the defects. The pic is attached. I then offered her a 20% discount, to which she replied "I think 50% is more like it. These are not new". I understand that it was completely my fault for listing them as new, but shouldn't she return them and ask for a full refund if she was unsatisfied? I would pay for the return shipping. The pillings in the pic are hardly noticeable anyway; they do not call for 50% off. I want to offer her a full refund and pay for the return shipping, but I'm afraid she won't have it.. What should I do? Thanks!

I would refund her - this is a BIG MISTAKE to show item as NEW against PRE-OWNED.

In my opinion it is better to loose few dollars now and to learn from this valuable lesson.

But before you refund the money I recommend to discuss with buyer that in view of your agreement on refund she will not post the negative feedback to you in any line of the feedback system.

It is better that she will not post any feedbacks.

With small count of your feedbacks you DEFINITELY do not need a negative one.

Assume you will get negative feedback and trashed DSRs from this twit. Now protect yourself.

Do NOT refund her. That just rewards bad behaviour and I am certain will not protect your feedback.

Tell her politely that you stand behind your products and that you will make a full refund on return of the item.

And that's it.

The picture may or may not be the pants you sent, eh?

(stouffvillejen is a much nicer person than I am.)

And that should be your only communication. Return for refund. Return for refund. Return for refund.

If she returns the pants, make the refund. But NOT BEFORE.

If there is pilling, make the refund and further use Paypal's Send Money to refund her return shipping cost.

Remember no matter what you do, this bully will probably trash your feedback.

It's tough, because your feedback is still low. You may need to drop this poisoned ID or turn it into a buying ID and start a clean new selling ID.

I'm glad you think I'm a nice person (well, nicer than you, anyway lol), but how did I get to be part of this?  I've never had any opinion on the possible reliability or unreliability of pictures sent by buyers.

I think the OP would have noticed damage like that on track pants, and usually people don't give used items as gifts.  Therefore asking for return before refunding is reasonable.  And it's what ebay/paypal allows, isn't it? To ask for return of the item before refunding?  If you strongly suspect the buyer will leave negative feedback no matter what you do, might as well ask for the item back before putting out any refund.
