Canada plummets to 21st on World Press Freedom index

It should come as no surprise that Canada under the Harper dict-er-government has fallen to 21st on the World Press Freedom index, after being in the top five as recently as 2002.

More evidence of Harper's slow but insidious manipulation of our once-envied society into a place where fear and oppression are steadily displacing freedom and compassion as our most important traits.

A few months ago, it was revealed that Canada had dropped to to 11th on the UN Human Development Index, where we enjoyed a first place ranking for years, as former PM Jean Chretien famous liked to boast about.

One would think that our fortunate nation, left on sound financial ground by the previous Liberal government and enrichened with oil wealth, would have prospered even more in recent years compared to other countries.

Obviously not so. Two more years of Harperism we have to endure.

valve - you can do better than that.  This is typical small "c" conservative partisan politics: you do not like the message, attack the messenger. 😞  That is a shameful attitude and you can do better than that.

Harper is like a man who owns (or has control of) a home. On the outside it’s beautiful for all to see as they pass by. On the inside however the walls are collapsing, the floors are rotting and the foundation is being under minded. What Harper shows is all façade, all fake.

Harper is an egotist and narcissist who from the day he walked into the mail room at Imperial Oil his main goal was to take care of himself and fulfill his needs and wants. Entering into politics his main goal was to become #1 in Canada and maybe even beyond through the acclaim of others (however others with much more experience always have seen through him). Canada was easy, just a matter of the Liberals totally messing up and he was a shoe in because of the sad simplistic system we have. But even then…..no one really trusted him. To his luck the Liberals never came up with a viable candidate and so eventually he got his majority, but even then not a strong public one.

Harper always aimed for the short sighted and the narrow minded, the right winged religious right (who aren’t right), the lost children of western movies who love their guns because they are all they have to support their manhood and the angry little dictators who live their lives, anger, hopes, resentments, bigotry and even racism through him. If they can’t be what they want to be in neon lights then they’ll settle for being the cheerleaders in the background.

We need to bring back the Canada that was optimistic, daring, intelligent, democratic and just, with a leader who even though he may have his or her faults, they’re open to the people and honest.

Time to fix the heart of our home and get rid of the occupant of the house…..and he can take his hall full of personal photos and his dresser with him.

Valve still has the right of freedom of speech.

Even though anyone remotely connected with the federal government is censored by Harper.

Really???  If life worked like that I would never be able to support anyone....  and to be fair I really wish some people would stop telling me what I believe - it is annoying.

This thread is about Canada falling to 21st on the World Press Freedom Index.

I think it is quite clear by a multitude of Conservative policies - from muzzling scientists, forbidding anyone in the military, or anyone in the government at any level, from making public statements, right through to forbidding their candidates from participating in all-candidates meetings and forbidding their own Conservative Members of Parliament from making statements in the House of Commons and so forth.

Cats you are welcome to participate in the discussion to your heart's content.

If you disagree with my conclusion, which to me is super-abundantly obvious, please give me some reason to reconsider.

I will agree with one thing though - that censorship is becoming pervasive in more than just our politics. Who accepts this? I do not.

That is quite true.

However, I agree with cats1953 that your earlier comment "Canadians who support Harper support censorship" is ill advised and insulting to the millions of Canadians who voted for a candidate of the CPC in the last election.

Voting for a candidate or a party does not mean one supports every policy suggested by its leadership.

You're right Pierre and I apologize. Probably many people never dreamed that voting for the supposed "free-enterprise" party would result in a vast veil of censorship falling across the country.

What I would have more wisely said was that supporting the Conservative Party has the effect of supporting and enabling censorship.

You may also consider that widespread censorship isn't just some detail in the fine print, like the number of feet your garage has to set back from the road. Freedom of expression is one of the basic tenets of our society and people better not go into the next election not realizing the Harper position on this issue.

Guess you have to take it with a grain of salt when it's being posted by someone not smart enough to actually read the article or the graph that shows Canada as 20th????

The ranking of most countries is no longer attributable to dramatic political developments. This year’s index is a better reflection of the attitudes and intentions of governments towards media freedom in the medium or long term.  The same three European countries that headed the index last year hold the top three positions again this year

Gee and they also changed the way they rate countries--HMMM how can you say someone dropped or rose when the critiria is different?

OHHH by the way--nothing like "twisting a story"  LOL

when Mr Martin took over Canada was 10th having dropped from 5th the year before (hMMM who was in power then??) and when he left office in 2006 he had dropped us in 3 years 6 SIX places to 16th . In in the next 7 SEVEN years we have dropped 4 places. In FACT Harper took us back to 10th in 11-12 and now that they have changed the way they calculate things we are back down to 20th.

I know sad when the FACTS get in the way of a good LIBERAL smearing--LOL

Concentrate on what matters, censorship to a degree is a requirement so explain how it is affecting your life at the moment in a negative way.

valve - that is one side of the lefget.  The other:

"The ratio of Canadian household debt to disposable income rose to another record last quarter, calling into question Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney’s assertion that families are listening to his warnings about the risks of borrowing too much.

Credit-market debt such as mortgages rose to 165.0% of disposable income, compared with 164.7% in the prior three-month period, Statistics Canada said Friday in Ottawa."

"National net worth rose 1% to $6.87 trillion in the fourth quarter, Statistics Canada said. On a per capita basis the increase was to $195,900 from $194,300.

Households’ credit market debt, which includes mortgages, consumer credit and loans, rose by $14.7 billion in the quarter, about half the increase seen in the third, Statscan said."

and so on.

In a sense you're probably right, stevephinn because those who do the evaluations I'm sure can't be intimately aware of the details going on in each country.

If they were better informed about Canada the rating would likely be even lower. Considering that the major newspapers in the country all supported the Conservatives at a rate of 29 to 1 in the last election (by comparison, support for political parties in the U.S. roughly mirrors the level of support in society at large), the degree of media concentration in an ever-diminishing few corporate hands and the appalling degree to which Canada finds its communications infrastructure controlled by the same corporations that own the media (in this respect, Canada's situation is the worst in the developed world by a country mile).

Nice of you to check in pd.

"Pay attention to what matters"  Valve, I believe this is what people have been told on certain other occasions (that need not be named) throughout history.

A reasonable "degree" of censorship, as you imply, has long been left far in the dust by Harper's inquisitors.

So let me see if I have this correct---Liberals in power From 2002-2006 and the ranking drops from 5th to 16th and NO PROBLEMS normal course of things. Then the Conservatives take over and in 7 years it drops another 4 spots (liberals dropped it 11 in 3 years) And the Liberals had it right and the Conservatives have it wrong?

Not to mention before they changed the criteria the conservatives had brought it back up to 10th under the old rules (the ones the Liberals dropped 11 spots with and the conservatives got 6 of those back)
