It should come as no surprise that Canada under the Harper dict-er-government has fallen to 21st on the World Press Freedom index, after being in the top five as recently as 2002.

More evidence of Harper's slow but insidious manipulation of our once-envied society into a place where fear and oppression are steadily displacing freedom and compassion as our most important traits.
A few months ago, it was revealed that Canada had dropped to to 11th on the UN Human Development Index, where we enjoyed a first place ranking for years, as former PM Jean Chretien famous liked to boast about.
One would think that our fortunate nation, left on sound financial ground by the previous Liberal government and enrichened with oil wealth, would have prospered even more in recent years compared to other countries.
Obviously not so. Two more years of Harperism we have to endure.

How Harper muzzles science:
Stevephinn, you'll notice that they added many countries to the survey over those years you're talking about.

" before they changed the criteria the conservatives had brought it back up to 10th"
Spinning will not change the facts. On the contrary. Spinning generally results in a loss of credibility.

so lets stick to the FACTS!!!!
2002 (first time ever recorded) we are 5th--Liberals in Power!
2006 when Concervatives took over we had DROPPED 11 places (actually more) and were tied for 16th (actually 16th-17th and 18th)
And for some reason that is not news worthy--HMMMMM 11 places in 4 years
BUT since 2006 (YEP 7 years) we have dropped an additional 4 spots (actually 2 since we were tied for 18th as much as we were tied for 16th)
AND this is big news and Harper is ruining Canada
Talk about spin! lol

KISS - no spin needed
"2002 (first time ever recorded) we are 5th--Liberals in Power!"
Today - eleven years later?

Steve, the article linked in OP is clear about the reasons Canada was ranked so low and everything points to the current cabinet.

There are no employers who allow their employees to call a press conference and post their new discoveries without the emplyers approval. Employees who critisize an employer publicly soon find themselves to be ex-employees.
This applys to government as well as private employees.

so again--explain the drop of over 11 places while the LIBERALS were in power?

Part of the reason was increasing concentration of media ownership and other factors that were somewhat out of the direct control of the government.
The problem now is regression in freedom of speech and press freedom due to the Harper's paranoid control freak actions. Right from day one of his coming into office, reducing press access to the government and he's just never stopped. Now they're going to curtail the federal websites, so there will be less information available there.
Just like certain other government leaders in the world (hiya Kim Jong-un!!) Harper is well aware that the more people know about him and his government, the less they will like him.

"other factors that were somewhat out of the direct control of the government". such as the direction of the jet stream? El Niño? Rhino poaching? Fashion trends in Mozambique?
I must be one of the few here who doesn't like Harper less as time goes on, but that's ok too.

I'm sure your boundless affection is soaring as you search the lost corners of logic for any reason to justify Conservative censorship.

There's censorship and then there's this.

Geller is a nice girl, a real princess.
Interesting personal history, filled with bigotry and hate. Being the hypocrite
she is, she hates political Islam but approves political Judaism and
Christianity. Nothing more than a political blogger she’s the type of hate
monger Canada does not need. I’m all for freedom of speech but she does it with
a capital H for Hate. To me she falls in the same category as some spokesperson
for the Canadian National Socialist Party.

Awesome turn of phrase, Art! You are becoming a wordsmith, and I like it. Substitute "soaring boundless affection" for "complete indifference" and you will be closer to the truth of the matter. I consider this so-called "Conservative censorship" just another Liberal obsession over triviality. Youse gotta dig up some bone about Harper to gripe about, so if it isn't one thing, it's another! It's OK; understand. The last couple of years have gotta been pure misery for you watching Harper wreak havoc on your dreams of a Socialist Utopia.
