What do buyers expect about "Communications " ?
- quick reply to their inquiries
- quick acknowledgement of their purchase/payment
- quick posting of positive feedback acknowledging their payment
- quick advice that the goods have been shipped, the day of shipment
- a printed invoice or receipt with the goods showing listing number, description, price and email address where to reach the seller in case of problem
This is the "communications" I have given my customers for over fifteen years selling on eBay. They have rewarded me with 5.0 in "Communications" ever since the program was created.
It may not be necessary to duplicate my methods of operations to obtain a 5.0 but it works for me.

From eBay.com
If the seller met specific requirements, the seller automatically receives a 5-star communication detailed seller rating, and you won't be able to change the rating
and sometimes... even if a rating of less than 5 is left... That rating can be changed to a 5....
and more from eBay.com
To give you credit for transactions where a buyer doesn't need to contact you, you'll automatically receive a 5-star communication detailed seller rating if:
*You specify either same business day or 1 business day handling and upload tracking information within 1 business day.
*There are no buyer- or seller-initiated communications in eBay Messages
*There are no requests for contact information between you and the buyer.
Many of those 5's are automatic.......
Also applies to eBay.ca

Of the 4 rating categories the Communication one is definitely the easiest to maintain a 5 rating. All you need to do is be polite for the small number of buyers that you actually have communication with.
Although it can happen it's very rare for a seller to be demoted in any way solely due to the communication rating.
