Fresh changes at Canada Post for USA / INTL, been told at post office...

Hi, I've just been told at post office by an employee (who was coming back from a Canada Post meeting about new shipping policies) that there are changes regarding customs declaration sticker for Small Packet, Expedited Parcel, Xpresspost, etc.

From now on, because it's being requested by customs :

1) Declaration sticker has to fit on top surface of package, no more "wrapping around" because your box is too small for Expedited Parcel sticker (example).

2) If you want your insurance to be valid, you have to write the addressee's phone number on declaration sticker.

This simply means that you will have to pay more to buy a larger box and of course to ship that larger box, in case sticker doesn't totally fit on top surface.

IN OTHER WORDS, EVEN IF YOU CAN FIT YOUR ITEM IN A SMALL BOX, IT IS NOT THE ITEM SIZE AND WEIGHT THAT TELL YOU SIZE OF MAILER/BOX. -> IT IS THE DECLARATION STICKER MEASUREMENTS THAT YOU ARE SHIPPING NOW !!

Result : I will remove Expedited Parcel and Xpresspost from items descriptions, and just keep Small Packets (because stickers are smaller). And unfortunately, I will have to predict that no auction ends over $100, actual limit of Small Packets insurance. I will also have to remove info concerning my FREE COMBINED SHIPPING offer. No more free combined order for me...

Solution : Canada Post should allow larger packages at same price than packages with a top surface smaller than customs declaration stickers !

I agree with jeffglobal on this one!

I use Ebay to buy and sell hockey cards and full sets. What ticks me off is that I could take a full set that someone in Texas is selling for $7.95 and sell it for $4.95 myself. If someone in Toronto (2 hours from here) were to buy one of each, one from Texas, and one from me, the set from Texas would still be cheaper by a few dollars for him because of the outrageous S&H costs incurred by Canada Post. It would cost me about 8 or 9 bucks to ship it, where from the States it only cost them $2-3!!!

I agree that this makes it extremely tough and hard to compete against other US sellers that may offer the exact same product and in some cases, even more expensive! Because of this, I have had to pull almost all of the sets I was offering online simply because I can't compete against that extremely low shipping rate. When are we gonna get a break from Canada Post???

I do believe that many who are angry and/or frustrated with eBay are really angry and frustrated with Canada Post.

Just curious, has eBay.ca ever had a *sit-down* with Canada Post about the shipping costs? I know that we could all write letters to Canada Post, but I do feel that a corporation might have better luck in bringing us to a more equal playing field with the States.

They have to what extent I can't say although at one time they made it sounds like a serious effort.

One major problem....even combining all the business of every Canadian eBay seller it doesn't add up to a major chunk of Canada Post's total volume.

It's certainly enough to get the top level discounts from Canada Post and eBay does get that, they only pass along (via PayPal postage) a small portion, the same portion ANYBODY can get using Venture One and EST, the rest goes in eBay's pocket.

Keep in mind that Canada Post doesn't have the ability to offer much in the way of price reductions, their profits relative to their total revenues is actually quite small.

Concerning Canada Post, has anyone else ever heard of this? About a month ago while dropping some packages off, I was told by the CP employee there to make sure I was saving ALL of my Canada Post reciets. When I asked why, she informed me that come next year, on my tax return, that I could claim all of them for a refund since it is a government service. A few other CP employees I've asked have confirmed it as well.

Being relatively new to all of this, I was wondering. Is this true and if anyone else has, how much of a return or percentage do you see on it as a tax refund? Because that could be a huge benefit if true!!

Postage is a business expense, always has been.

You can't claim a refund but you can deduct business expenses from business income.

There is always room for improvement. Cut down the dealer's commisions for example. Many variety stores get the traffic only because of CanadaPost in furthest corner.

Another issue is effectivity - I am not sure how they do it elsewhere, but here in Burlington the postmen from entire area come in the morning to central post office to pick their mail. Many come by cab, leave by cab and then walk their route. IMHO it would be much cheaper and more effective to send a truck and drop the bag with mail at every postman house instead.

They say they are loosing money on lettermail, but does not the same postman have to deliver the unaddressed admail the same as lettermail?

USPS recognized that people who prepare their packages are costing them less money and significantly discounted electronically prepared parcels. Now I come to the post office with bunch of Small Packet and Light Packet. Everything is prepared, prelabeled, recently we even started prefilling the information which postal clerk is supposed to fill-up. She just places it on the scale and stamps the Small Packet form, places the generated label over. My 20 packages take 5 minutes to process. Then the guy comes, he will be filling up the Small Packet form by hand and his ONE parcel will take 3-5 minutes of postal clerk time. The senior citizen comes and likes to talk, they want to mail something but need to ask 20 questions.

That's why the postal service is more expensive than it COULD be. They have low profit margins because they are doing certain things the hard way. It's working, but it could be done

And what is their incentive to change things? CP is like a monopoly for non-courier postal services and they are the best deal for regular folks anyway.

OCR technologies have been around for years and address printed on a clean label should be piece of cake to read by machine and track automatically online without attendance of live person.

407 highway can do it, so should be able CanadaPost.

Considering they are not turning big profits at prices they charge and volumes they process I suspect there is a lot of human labour involved in processing mail by CanadaPost.

I'm no friend of Canada Post and certainly there are areas of their operations that go handle some cost cutting.

Cut down the dealer's commisions for example

I'm on very good terms with my local outlet, he had to let his minimum wage assistant go as he simply couldn't afford it on the percentage Canada Post pays him (it's a moderately busy outlet).

They say they are loosing money on lettermail, but does not the same postman have to deliver the unaddressed admail the same as lettermail?

Carrier costs are only a portion of the cost to deliver mail, if it wasn't for Admail rates would be even higher.

IMHO it would be much cheaper and more effective to send a truck and drop the bag with mail at every postman house instead.

That's pretty much how it's done here in Toronto, carrier goes to the local depot to sort their mail, they take the first load with them while the rest is delivered to lock boxes enroute. Don't know what it's like in your area but there is no way around here that a carrier could carry an entire days mail at one time.

USPS recognized that people who prepare their packages are costing them less money and significantly discounted electronically prepared parcels.

USPS give a 5% discount for online postage, Canada Post gives 3%.

Then the guy comes, he will be filling up the Small Packet form by hand and his ONE parcel will take 3-5 minutes of postal clerk time. The senior citizen comes and likes to talk, they want to mail something but need to ask 20 questions.

The joy of running a CP franchise, commission is based on postage sold, doesn't matter how long it takes to process each customer they get the same percentage.

As for cost cutting, there's still room but they have done an enormous amount over the past 20 - 30 years by outsourcing postal services (franchise outlets, contract drivers etc.).

And what is their incentive to change things? CP is like a monopoly for non-courier postal services

The only monopoly they have is for standard First Class mail, if it was really possible to provide the services for less wouldn't there be private sector companies undercutting them?

In Stratford we used to have a few postal outlets scattered around the city. One by one they quit, the most recent one being the 7-Eleven store not far from my home.

Now we have one source besides the Post Office and it is located in a stationery & office supply store downtown not far from the Post Office. But they at least know what they are doing because they have staff that work full time in their Postal Outlet, not part time like so many other places. I don't miss the one at the 7-Eleven at all. I had to tell them what to do and they still argued with me at times. And all I use is Light & Small packet and the occasional Expedited. How hard is that?

However the 7-Eleven did do a fair volume of business which the other two now have to handle and the line-ups are longer.

Hi jeffglobal (and company),

Happy Friday, folks.

Yes, we communicate with Canada Post - constantly, since the day we opened in 2000. Our fantastic shipping manager, Lilybean, has been working with them for a few years now on such massive projects as the eBay/PayPal label printing tool, shipping calculator and the upcoming flat rate box.

As all of you have pointed out, Canada Post is a massive government agency with a huge bureaucracy. We push them incredibly hard to move faster and come to the table with better offers for our users. We work with them on all the key issues - faster service, lower rates, new types of services, better tools for our users.

The progress has been slower than we would like, but probably faster than any other partner of our size has ever managed to achieve. (As repced pointed out, the contribution of eBay users collectively to Canada Post's bottom line is miniscule compared to such customers as the banks, for instance.)

We'll have more on the flat rate box soon ...

Cheers,

Miriam

The "Flat Rate" box sounds like a great initiative. Looking forward to that one for sure (crossing my fingers that it applies to more places than just shipments sent within Canada)....

Don't get too excited, I predict if CP comes out with a flat-rate box it will only work for those that have the perfect combination of small size and heavy weight.

Lilybean, has been working with them for a few years now on such massive projects as the eBay/PayPal label printing tool

This massive project resulted in a application that is junk and pretty much does nothing more than further increase the amount of money in eBay's bank account.

Nothing personal to Lillybean or Miriam of course but this is the true result of the PayPal shipping project.

Want to save money on postage?

Serious about it?

Forget "convenient" PayPal and CP online postage.

Buy large lots of postage stamps available at large discount at philatelic public auctions (typically 25% to 30% below face value).

Yes some work is involved (matching lower denominations) and one needs to invest a few dollars (most auction lots with substantial savings sell for $1,000+).

As they say "you need to spend money to make money!" .

The upcoming FLAT RATE BOX announcement is going to be a total let down given that both eBAY and CanadaPOST do not give a dam about helping small business here in Canada be more competitive.

I know that lilybean is doing here best but in the end it will be for something that only few will be able to benefit from.

Notice that there is no mention of FLAT RATE BOX for USA destination just Canada.

99% of our sales are into the USA and currently CanadaPOST is making good money why would they introduce a new product that would take away from their profits.

Oh well, lets see what the GODS have in store for us.

recped, my wife (my part-time employee) actually does not mind shipping via PayPal. Yes, at first she frowned upon all the information one needs to fill-up comparing to Small packet, but she got used to it. I think she prefers the interface comparing to EST. Plus the discount seems better than the one you get via EST.

The discount is only better on Expedited-USA (I believe)and that's only an extra 1% over Venture One/EST. The bulk of the discount (another 10 - 20%) goes in eBay's pocket.

I have to admit I've never used PayPal shipping but anything that doesn't provide a proper receipt or log, incorrectly charges tax and creates a separate payment for every transaction just doesn't seem to me to be very well thought out.

"CanadaPOST do not give a dam about helping small business here in Canada be more competitive."

That is correct. It is NOT the mandate of Canada Post to make Canadian retailers competitive with retailers from other countries.

Their job is to move parcels from one point to another, either inside the country or for exports to the USA or overseas. They are generally competitive (not always the cheapest) with other Canadian parcel carriers.

Canada Post expects to make a small profit (approximately 3% of sales on average) to reward its shareholder for the huge investment. This margin of profit is usually much less than its major competitors such as UPS, FedEx, CanPar, Greyhound, etc... .
