Hi Heidilynn,

I saw this posting and read your answer.

So, if someone makes a bid and is outbid, they can still be obligated to buy if the person doesn't pay?

well, What is the use of bidding then?

Also, I see a lot of bidders with *** and letters. They seem to outbid everyone. Why is that?

Thank you.

P.S. I hope I'm not too demanding,lol

And if you're wondering, - your disguised ID is d***a, easily discernible from your feedback.  Like I said, used to be that the whole ID was displayed, but these altered forms make it too difficult for dodgy people to sort out, but still keep the whole system open enough to create an honest environment in which real people feel comfortable.

I'm not heidilynn, but you did post to a public usage board. 🙂

Those *** and letters are a slight disguise of our regular user ID.  It is a brilliant system to keep scammers away yet because the combination is derived from our regular ID and follows the ID for all eternity, it subsequently enables decent honest people to track shillers if they are willing to put a bit of time into it.

That is why x***y or something similar appears to win.  You can find out who it really is in feedback, and there is not a lot of privacy or secrets on ebay.  It all keeps things clean and honest, at least as much as possible.

Anyway, if you bid and someone outbids you but then does not pay, - once the auction has ended you are no longer obliged to buy it as the runner-up.  You may get a second chance offer, and a lot of people believe those are the result of shillers and don't accept them.  But you can accept, ignore, or decline the offer.

If the auction is still on and the other person retracts, then you could end up the winner at the end and you would then be expected to pay for the item in your Purchase History, just like any other.

Hi stan.. dmil has explained why eBay hides IDs (except our own) during the bidding process.

Bidding is part of a process that ends with the listing. Our committment does not end when being outbid occurs. High bidder may retract and second becomes high again and may win and thus committed to pay unless seller will agree to cancel.

It doesn't happen often but never a good idea to bid on another same unless several bidders removed from 2nd.
