First off, I hope you will be allowing him to use your high-feedback account to sell this.
That in itself will discourage scammers.
Look into Priority Post and into couriers like UPS or FedEx. Ask about their Express services that prepay brokerage costs. They may sound more expensive , but ...
Look, your kid is a gamer, and I don't mean to cast aspertions, but this is a demographic with high levels of testosterone as well as some arrogance and entitlement. So anything that ticks them off is likely to go nuclear.
Including being charged duty and sales tax.
And US buyers do pay duty on imports over $200.
So... if you can make the duty (if the US charges duty on used items) payable before shipping, you have already dodged that bullet.
Couriers ship to the door and demand a signature (usually). If there is anything to collect they will not hand over the parcel without it.
Usually I prefer the postal system, but our public auction has been shipping high-value stamps to collectors for many years and use FedEx extensively.

Another option available to an experienced TRS seller such as yourself would be XpressPost USA and Int'l which provide signature option and is insurable up to $1000.00CAD. Not quite as much as you need but maybe a decent compromise for value/price.

That is a link you can look at for the options offered thru XpressPost services.
Hope this helps....
