After receiving notification that my item has been sold for 0.99 plus shipping cost, and that cheque is with Paypal, how do I go about cancelling my intent to sell?

You cannot cancel your intent to sell.

You can refuse to sell which will probably give you

a black mark and a Negative Feedback,  and as a new

user that is not good.

You also had your listing as shipping to the USA only

which probably cost you some bids.

You probably listed the item with a Buy it Now price. Buy It Now is not the same as a reserve. Once you get a bid, the Buy It Now price disappears.

You should have listed your item as the least amount you were willing to accept.

To cancel the transaction, you will need the buyer's cooperation and I doubt they'd be willing to cooperate since they won the item legitimately for 99 cents.

The opening price IS a Reserve, in that no one can bid less than the opening.

I hope your item was not extremely valuable. Think of it as part of the learning curve.

And as said above, never list for less than you are willing to accept.
