I have a seller asking me to pay an extra amount for shipping above what is in the listing.

I bid on an item in a listing and won. The listing showed a certain amount for shipping, which I thought was not an unreasonable amount ($13 for USPS from LasVegas to Michigan). Now, the seller has contacted me and wants an extra $30 because that's what the post office charged him (he says over and above the amount he had in the listing). The seller wants me to pay this extra via paypal but sent to their personal email address, outside of ebay I think this means. Thing is, the item has apparently been shipped but presumably only after the seller had paid this extra amount? I do not feel comfortable at all with their request. I bought it on the faith of what was posted in Ebay. What should I do? I don't want to be out my money but I'm not sure this would be covered by the ebay guarantees.

No.

When we sellers make that kind of an error, it's a case of 'suck it up, buttercup'.

You, the buyer, paid on the basis of the advertised cost, including the $13 shipping. Unless, BEFORE bidding, you requested a more expensive service, that's all he can collect.

Politely tell him that you cannot see your way to paying any more than the advertised cost. Ask him for the date and service of shipping as well as the tracking number.

If he does not ship, or if he tells you he has shipped but the item has not arrived after Day 20 from purchase, open an Item Not Received Dispute.

If he does not provide proof of delivery or a refund, Paypal will refund you and go after him for their money. There will be other fallout that will be more costly to his selling account than $17 in postage.

Politely-- Captain Malcolm Reynolds
