I just sold something, was asked for a refund, but the transaction has given me errors

So I sold an item recently, a trading card, for a bit of money. eBay sends me an email at 10AM notifying me of this. 9 minutes later, at 10:09AM, I receive a cancel order request. I didn't think much of it and went through with the email. Unfortunately I should've been more careful, as it seems I did not receive any PayPal email telling me I had received payment.

Evidently it seems I have refunded a payment that never happened, and now I am missing the money and PayPal gives me errors. I'm not sure what to do as I have never had to deal with this before. The seller has 1 feedback, from 2011. All attempts to contact him have failed, and eBay wants me to wait 2 days before opening an unpaid item case. Additionally the only way it seems I can contact eBay is through a phone number that does not work for me (I live in Canada).

Is this a common scam? Have I been duped? What can I do?

I don't think it is a scam.

It sounds as if all the error is on your part.

It is not difficult to cancel a sale, without making a refund.

, and eBay wants me to wait 2 days before opening an unpaid item case.

Did you go first to PP?

Go to your PP account and see if you can cancel that payment.

Did you do it as a 'Send Money'?

Because PP needs a payment before you can refund a payment, but you can Send Money to anyone anytime if you have their email address.
