If an expensive item turns out to be a forgery is the seller under any obligation to refund?

The first step is to contact the seller and explain your doubts. Ask to return it for a full refund.

The seller is not required to pay for your return postage. You should use Confirmed Delivery/tracking when you return the item.

If the seller does not refund promptly when he recieves it, or if he refuses your right of return, start a Dispute here:

Don't spend much time discussing this. If he takes PP he takes returns.

When PP sees that the item is back in the seller's hands, if he has not voluntarily refunded, they will refund you from their own pocket and go after him for their money.

Confirmation of Delivery can be expensive. Especially if the seller is overseas.

If you do not go the Dispute route, you can leave appropriate feedback for up to 60 days. The most effective feedback is calm and factual. Others will judge you on your feedback left.

Yes , seller was unaware of any problem with the item and very obliging.
Seller so far shows complete professionalism.
To confirm items as a forgery takes 8-10 weeks so for safety sake I will file the dispute as a formality just to be sure.
Thanks for the information.
