If you cancel a transaction will the buyer be refunded automatically or do you have to manually?

If someone sent a payment to the wrong paypal address. If I cancel the transaction will they be refunded automatically? It is an old account I have since closed. I linked my new account but it didn't work. Can anyone help me? Thank you!
