Yes, now if the could only figure out how to allow us to charge HST for NB,NS and NL and our own provincial sales tax.

No question that we have a complicated tax system if we want to sell nationally but not really any more complicated than the USA where there are 50 individual state taxes.

Hmmmmmmm??

If you are selling out of province only the GST is applicable.
GST is also charged on shipping.
Make a note of that.

I was under the VERY strong impression that HST is required to be charged when selling to NB, NS and NL. When I ship to those provinces from Ontario CanadaPost has a separate line for HST and charges me on postage. If they are required to charge HST, why am I not?

From what I understand, unless you're selling over $30,000 you don't have to charge GST? Is that correct? Is that even the correct amount? And I'm not sure, but is that net? or gross? I really have to ask my accountant I guess.

If you are a registered business you are not required to collect GST or HST. You are required to submit/pay GST and HST to the feds so if you don't collect, it comes out of your pocket.

How do some of you handle the different tax rates in Canada (HST in the maritimes, GST everywhere else, PST in your province)?

The Paypal sales tax option works great until I need a different sales tax rate. Right now I just refund and send the buyer a correct invoice.

Oh mahsauction, I beg to differ.

The GST is a "consumer" tax and is required by registered businesses to be collected.

If you check with CCRA they will tell you quite plainly that it is improper for businesses to pay the tax on behalf of their customers. That's why you will frequently find that little footnote in sale flyers where retailers claim that they are paying the tax. The footnote will explain that what they are actually offering is a discount equal to the GST or PST (whichever their sale purports to offer).

PayPal does not make provisions for the differing tax levels we are required to collect.

It has been an ongoing struggle that I have voiced a number of times on this board.
