Paypal v. eBay Coverage - When to get signature confirmation??

On today's weekly board, we got into a discussion about Paypal and eBay protection that unfortunately was cut short due to time constraints.  If anyone who was there would like to continue, I hope they'll have seen the final Q&A below, which I think clarified the issue (I've changed the font to make this part easier to see on this post):

raphael@ebay.com wrote:

Since a CA seller, unless shipping only to the US, has no way to know what site their item will be purchased on, we thought it would be more prudent to state the lower PayPal Protection threshold to helo sellers be protected in all occurrences. Please pardon the white lie, it's for your own good :smileyhappy:

But ... my head's spinning a bit now.  Wouldn't it be prudent to state $750 so that Canadian sellers would be fully protected in the event a buyer purchased the seller's item on .com?  I thought I'd finally understood all this -- obviously not. :smileyhappy:

I think you're looking at this backwards. If eBay says everything over $750 needs signature to be protected and PayPal says everything above $250 needs signature to be covered, if I don't know which program is going to protect me, I might choose to use signature on anthing above $250 to make sure I'm safe in every case.

So, if I can paraphrase what Raphael is saying, and if I understand correctly, as a seller you will want to protect yourself from buyer claims at the minimum value level.  If you get signature confirmation for any item valued above $250 US, you'll be protected in both the US and Canada, regardless of which site the item is purchased on and which site a buyer claim may be filed on (Paypal for items purchased on .ca, and eBay Buyer Protection for items purchased on .com).

Although, if I understood correctly (and this is where it got confusing) a buyer purchasing on .com can choose to file a claim only through Paypal, but a buyer purchasing on .ca can only initiate a claim through Paypal, since the eBay Protection Plan is not yet available in Canada.

The various other amounts that have been mentioned (such as $325 Cdn) are probably moot, since, at least as long as the Cdn dollar remains above 80% of $US, that $250 threshold will cover all instances.

And, of course, this is distinct from shipping insurance, except that signature confirmation is only available on insured/insurable shipping services anyway.

I think I finally get it!  Please, please, correct me if I'm mistaken - I'd like to get a handle on this issue.  Smiley Wink

I think what you meant to say is that a buyer purchasing a listing while on .com, can file a claim through Paypal OR ebay but if a buyer is on .ca when they purchase an item, they can only file a claim through Paypal.

I'd like to say a bit more about this but I really have to get some work done..maybe I'll have time tonight.

This board is a bad influence, especially for procrastinators! 🙂

Yes, a buyer purchasing on .com has both options available, whereas the same buyer purchasing on .ca has only Paypal.  Well, if we both understood it the same way, by George, I think we've got it.

You are right about these discussion boards ... I have a bolt of wool waiting on my studio table to be cut out for a suit.  I've tried snapping my fingers, but alas...nothing happens.Smiley Wink

That is the way I always understood the policy.

I concur even though my name is not George!

However I totally operate as if Seller Protection doesn't exist, no need to jumpo through hoops to get something I can do myself on my own terms.
