Hey there, I am not really big on eBay but I decided to throw up an expensive item I have just to get it out of my house. It's been quiet for a week or two since I put it up and today I got a message telling me that it sold. I'm naturally very suspicious of scammers when selling things online, because they seem to try their luck with me constantly. There are always red flags that come up like when the buyer is non descriptive about the product, or they use something that sounds like a blanket email such as "Hello Seller, I would like to purchase the item you put up for sale." Stuff like that. Anyways, so I got an email today telling me that my item sold, when I checked the email it pretty much gave me all those red flags. I also listed my item as only ships in Canada but the buyer is apparently from the US with 0 feedback and a 1 year old memership. So far he has only asked me for an invoice as well as pictures and to confirm what condition the item is in (he never specified what the item was though,) and even offered to pay for int'l shipping once he confirms. It didn't seem so unreasonable, so I sent him pictures and gave him the invoice - then about 25 minutes later I got an email from a non-green shield and unrecognized email address that had a clear Trademark R in the name which paypal doesn't do in their int'l email address. And it was a receipt (or atleast looks like one) for the amount I invoiced. I checked Paypal manually and saw no such transaction. All my alarm bells are going off and I'm curious what others here think I should do?
Thanks

If you really stated Canada only on settings you don't ship to US if it is clearly in auction? It sounds like a scam avoid shipping . Next time block any buyer that is fussy you don't need those type people.

"I checked Paypal manually and saw no such transaction"
If the poayment doe snot appear in your PayPal account, you are dealing with a scammer.
I suggest you forward the alleged payment receipt you received to spoof@paypal.com including headers.
Once you have confirmation from PayPal that the email is fraudulent, contact eBay

Okay thanks, I sent it off to that email and they confirmed pretty quickly that it was a scam. Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure. I think the thing that threw me off is I thought that when you hit Buy it Now (it wasn't an auction) you either buy it right there on the spot or the item isn't sold to you. Glad I didn't send the product though, thanks all.

Good your were careful with this ''transaction''... Just remember to ship ONLY when your get a payment confirmation direclty from Paypal... and also may I suggest you to verify if the shipping address is the same in ebay and Paypal.
Best regards,

You are thinking of 'immediate payment required' which is an option under Seller Preferences.
Most purchases allow a minimum of four days for payment. To be precise, the seller cannot open an Unpaid Item Dispute until four days have elapsed.
You are savvy enough to have spotted the red flags of a scam. Yay!!
EBay is a safe place to buy and sell ,if you have common sense and try to understand the rules.
Good luck with your camera.

I would have sent a picture of something totally different just to see the buyer's reaction, lol.
