The Loonie vs the Greenback

Well the Loonie's brief foray onto the wild side appears to have been short lived. According to XE.com (at the time I'm writing this) the Greenback is now trading at 1.00096 against the Cdn. dollar.

Of course, it might be a while before we actually realize a par dollar (because of the actual exchange profits the bank or PayPal make) but it is kinda symbolic and a positive in what is otherwise a somewhat sluggish holiday selling season. The higher Loonie certainly has had an impact on my US sales this season while my domestic sales have risen.

Lol, seems the book got drunk and took advantage of bestshowtime one night..

Anyhoo, it was very funny to watch when the Canadian dollar was topping 0.93, and all the Canadians on T.V were like "Well my dollar is higher and I should have more buying power!" like all of a sudden they were gods.

LOL @ Moez. I laughed at that too or the ones who thought because the dollar was suddenly worth more they could walk into US stores and have them take our dollar. umm.....not quite!

LOL Most stores in the US and Canada are not equipped to accept multiple currencies. Even places like Walmart or your average grocery store yet these guys felt they could walk in and plunk down Canadian money and it should be accepted. Makes you wonder sometimes.....

The only places I know of that accept foreign currencie on both sides of the border are toursist places because they get tourists. Like Niagara Falls museums, CN Tower and stuff like that. Certainly not your local grocery or department store. sheesh

actually, major stores/restaurants that are near the border accept canadian cash and vice versa...growing up right on the border of sault michigan/sault ontario, it was nothing to go over and drop canadian cash like it was american...
...to add to the topic, the loonie can drop to .50 for all i care...back in the good old days on ebay before the dollar rose, i was making real good money, and when it rose, man did i feel the difference! probably because i don't sell lots of little things, but few big ones, and boy does it hurt!

I frequent Niagara Falls/Buffalo. It depends on how far in you go. Once you get past the Falls area into the non-tourist parts of the area, they don't take Canadian. Even the Walden Galleria which is where a lot of Canadians shop don't take our money. At least none of the stores I go to do. Sephora or Apple or Bath & Beauty, Cheesecake Factory etc...they won't touch it.

I've seen some restaurants, hotels and tourist spots like museums, attractions etc take them but you can't walk into a 7-11 or Best Buy in Tonawanda and hand over Canadian money. They'll look at you like you have 8 heads. Heck even places near the Seneca Niagara Casino won't take Canadian money.

Most stores and restaurants in downtown Stratford will take US currency because we are a tourist area. They are happy to see the Americans because they spend a lot of money here. Some of the businesses give them a good exchange rate too to encourage them to come back.
