automatic bidding

What is the difference between just putting in a maximum bid on an item

vs

Selecting Ebay to do Automatic Bidding for you?

To me they both seem exactly the same!

Thanks for taking the time to clue me in.

Ron

automatic bidding

That's because they are.

Proxy bidding just means that eBay's bots see your maximum bid and use it to bid for you (by proxy) until the bidding meets your limit.

Some new bidders and some addicted to auction action will "nibble bid" constantly increasing their maximums in an attempt to beat the bots, othr live bidders and e-sniping services.

While we're at it, e-sniping means leaving your maximum bid with a third party service which will enter your bids at a later time which you specify.

However you bid, nibble, one bid, or sniping, it is the highest bid that wins. The high bid is set by the underbidder, whose high bid is one increment less than that of the winner.
