Ebay is not the issue but if you are starting a small business ie buying to resell than taxes may be. Consult an accountant if necessary. Some help here..

Free advice is worth every penny you pay for it.
But.
Do keep records and pay income tax on your eBay profits. Without the records you may not know how much profit you are making.
You are only required to get a permit to remit taxes if you are grossing over $30,000 a year. But there are advantages to having one earlier, especially export tax credits on GST.
Your municipality may want your business registered, since most businesses mean more costs to them. (More garbage, more use of roads by customers and deliverymen, fire hazards, etc.) But commercial taxes are usually very high and your benefits may be reduced. For example, Ottawa will not pick up commercial garbage and businesses must make their own arrangements.
Most important, talk to your insurance agent if you are running a business out of your home. If your house burns down, you may have NO coverage if the insurance company was unaware that you had large stocks of whatever (flammable books, vintage clothing, used oil cans) on the property.
Selling a few item on the side is not a problem. All this kicks in when you start buying for resale.
