Re: can a seller charge any price for shipping he wants?

The short answer is yes.

Of course, any seller who charges ridiculous amounts for shipping is going to :

  • not get sales except from very naive buyers
  • receive interesting feedback and Detailed Seller Ratings from those buyers when they look at the postage on that "$70" package.

Now let's discuss a few other points.

The cost of shipping is not related to the value of the item. I shipped a $40 item a few minutes ago to a repeat buyer for 85 cents. Yesterday I shipped a $10 item to a new customer with $10.30 in postage on it.

The factors that decided the postage were location, weight, value, new/repeat customer.

The $10 item went overseas.

Neither item was tracked but tracking would have raised the 85c item to at least $14.00.

Also, posters are often shipped in tubes and Canada Post charges $1.50 extra postage for tubes.

Never mind the cost of packaging.

I am not trying to defend the seller. (Whose name will be removed from your post by the mods, btw. We are not allowed to name and shame members here.)

There was a time when sellers only paid fees on selling prices. Some would shift the selling price to the shipping price. So we saw items sold for $1.00 with $99.00 shipping.

EBay caught on to that, since annoyed members complained, and now both selling and shipping attract fees of about 10% on the payment. Apparently your seller hasn't noticed this. It's only been about five years.

And then there is the GSP.

I really don't want to talk about the GSP. I had chocolate pudding for dessert and I am in a good mood.

In any case, the point is moot.

The seller undoubtedly now has you on his Blocked Bidder List, so you will never buy from him accidentally. Because you would never buy from such a nitwit on purpose.

In future, check the shipping charges and if the total is reasonable, buy. Don't worry about how it breaks down.

And never be afraid to ask a seller. You learned that this guy is an idiot, which is useful. Another day you may have a seller thank you for drawing his attention to a typo that was reducing his sales.

Is it possible that when you look at the shipping cost, you're not taking into consideration that it is an oversize item and one that is sent with tracking and insurance across borders? Those things all cost real money. Unless, of course, the seller is in the business of giving their wares away for free. The seller you've named has good feedback, a lot of feedback, and isn't new to ebay. If he doesn't want to ship something for less than $50 postage, that is his or her prerogative.

The rule of thumb here on ebay is that if you don't like what you see for sale, move on. There are literally millions of sellers. As a buyer, you don't have to pick just one and expect his or her to meet your demands. You learned something about them, they learned something about you. You two won't meet in commerce.

Also, this seller lists in USD. You're buying in CAD. He doesn't control the rate of exchange.
