canada post sharply increases rates so what is the alternative?

with canada posts recent announcement of an increase of almost 40% for stamps, what is the alternative for shipping?  no one is going to pay a sellor for such outrageous shipping costs.

The increase of 30%-40% only applies to lettermail/letterpost and equivalent services from Canada Post.

Parcels services from Canada Post will see increases of less than 4% on average.

Re: canada post sharply increases rates so what is the alternative?

I have a flyer that I picked up at the post office.

Letter mail - which is 85% of my business will be 75 cents metered or 85 cents in booklets/coils or $1.00 for single stamps.

So, who would be dumb enough to buy a single stamp.  Even the casual letter mail sender will use a booklet eventually as commemoratives come in books of 6.

As for coils, does this mean you have to buy 100 stamps?

I have a lot of older stamps (45 to 50 cents) that I can use for postage as I paid well below face.

With older stamps, will I have to put on 85 cents or a dollar?  The older stamps are all in sheets, so at some point they were bought on bulk.  Very confusing.

Does anyone know the cost of a postage meter?  Do you buy or rent?

I got an answer from my favorite Shoppers Drug Mart postal clerk - the lovely Kim (she of many years experience).

She says that the rate when you use older stamps will be 85 cents.  As long as the face value of the stamps used is 85 cents, it will be just fine.
