if you put in a request to return does seller get a copy of that request?

I put in a request to return an item I received which and I purchased on ebay.  What I would like to know is do I also have to contact the seller or does ebay contact the seller?

It is always polite to contact someone with whom you have a problem directly and to explain the why you will be returning the item.

If eBay also informs him, that's a bonus.
