50% UPS Brokerage fee????

I bought an item that was $99.95 US. The Seller charged me $16.00 for UPS standard shipping to Canada.

The package arrived and here is a Brokerage C.O.D. due to UPS for $54.17. What a rip! The seller said nothing about additional fees due IN ADDITION to the $16.00 I paid him for the shipping. By looking under Help in eBay, I see there is nothing I can do about it.
The money's the same, whether you earn it or scam it.

Make UPS work on a level playing field with other carriers by having them disclose the ACTUAL fees that they charge both shipper and receiver

Gee, where is the disclaimer on Canada Post's stamps, (ie not on their web site or discussion forum), on the brokerage rates, (yes there is more than 1 level of fee), and the fact that you have to pay GST/PST on goods coming into the country?

Why isn't it on every mailbox and stamp Canada Post sells?

What are they trying to hide?

Okay, so now, on top of paying UPS for brokerage, we have to buy stamps from Canada Post before our inbound parcel is delivered?

Errr. Sir Edward, you make no sense.

If a SHIPPER from the UNITED STATES uses USPS to ship goods to Canada, he does not use Canadian postage. There is no valid comparison.

I would agree that the customs form that a US shipper must fill out and put on a USPS parcel should have a similar disclaimer that outlines what the RECEIVER will have to pay in Canada (eg. a $5.00 flat rate brokerage fee in the case of USPS/Canada Post).

He can then compare it with the total REAL cost of shipping using UPS.

UPS, USPS etc. should disclose ALL fees to the customers (the SHIPPER, includng those fees that they plan on charging the RECEIVER.

This helps protect the consumer, and would help eliminate all the complaining.

Wow......... canuckchat really doesn't understand whats being said. kazoobers couldn't have explained it any better.

On a side note, I talked with someone from UPS and they told me if it's your first shipment they will waive the UPS fee's. That brought my bill from $37 down to $6....Hmmmm Quite the difference.

They have my respect on how to deal with a compliant.

cc understands perfectly... duh... ya'll think that a COURIER company (remember, these are the folks you PAY to get your item to you FASTER than the post office) should broker your item in for the same nominal $5 that the post office does...

well - you can't have it both ways - use postal service or use courier service but the two are not a mix'n'match set!

Actually UPS does the mix'n'match with us. We live 5 km from the farthest, they will go. So to save them time and trouble, instead of delivering themselves, UPS drops any shipment for us off at the post office.

usually ya, when I want cake I would like to eat it too. Who wouldn't? If you wouldn't what would be the point of getting cake? You confuse me.

the ones in here going blah blah blah about ups, it's like this

USPS / CP - are like taxi's
UPS DHL etc - are like a limo service

comparing the 2 is dumb
yapping about it is a waste of time

it isNOT!!!! up to an exporter to know the importation laws of a foreign country, NOR is it up to an exporter to know/understand/care about any duties the reciver may have to pay

Lets just say - YOU sell something to someone in Italy
do YOU go through all of the laws rules and customs, for Italy, check to see for your client IF your stuff is allowed in Italy, and spend hours and hours of your time doing research?
NO

why? BECAUSE THAT IS THE IMPORTERS JOB !!!!

do NOT read between the lines

STOP obfuscating the truth

And stop kicking the horse, it died many moons ago :|

Actually, if USPS is like a taxi, then:

UPS is like a taxi that does not reveal the total charges until you get out, then holds your wallet until you pay these "mystery" charges.

pyro_nemesis13 and deev_hutch:

Thank you!
We're getting some intelligent responses now - I like this.

So, what it sounds like is that it's more about the so called 'sticker shock' of not being informed of the charges ahead of time.

In other words -
#1 - tell the buyer, before or at the time of bidding that if this item is shipped via UPS - "You will incur XX charges at the time of delivery." This may be possible. eBay knows what Country you are registered in. It knows what Country you are buying from. It could say "Your profile shows you are a Canadian. You are buying from the U.S. Your shipment may incur Duties, Taxes, and Brokerage Fees of approximately XX.." And then you would have the option to continue to bid or not?

#2 - "What to charge." I have seen the feedback that UPS / DHL / FedEx can charge "Whatever they want..." Which, of course, is true - they can. Maybe we could re-phrase the question. What would we, the buyers PREFER. A flat rate or a percentage of the selling price?

Thanks!
