Question about shipping address of seller

A seller has a number of higher priced items ($200+)  listed on ebay.ca and shows item location is Toronto. Having contacted the seller, he is apparently still living in the US and is shipping from there. My question is what are the ramifications in regards to customs and sales taxes? If a buyer in Canada thinks the item is coming from Toronto and gets hits with a customs and sale tax charge I think they would be highly ticked off. Am I correct on this or is there something I am missing in the shipping procedure?

Seller is violating the eBay rule that the listing should use the location the item is shipping from. While some Sellers can use a shipping method that clears the border at no extra expense to the Buyer, most don't.  An item of that value would most likely end up with a customs processing fee ($9.95 or higher) and sales tax, but likely no duty if North American made.

It falls into the Item-Not-As-Described category (wrong country ship-from location). The listing should have Report item link.

Question about shipping address of seller

Just checked the listings of the seller, and nothing has changed or been updated after I used the report button. I guess if ebay doesn’t care, why should I? Some Canadian buyers of these higher priced items are going to be in for a shock when they end up paying sales tax, and the Canada Post charge after the fact.

Question about shipping address of seller

And the seller is going to get bad marks for Disputes or Defects for not refunding promptly.

The thing with Report--- basically as Woody Guthrie sang "The boss won't listen when one guy squeaks..."

One report from one member could be a competitor, or a vigilante, or just wrong.

Several reports from several members?  "He's gotta listen when the union speaks."

Happy Labour Day!

Question about shipping address of seller

This is the latest reply from the seller who has the item location listed as Toronto.

I have reported this to ebay again. I’m sure nothing will be done again to correct this.

New message: shipped from US. It's a consignment item.

Question about shipping address of seller

If you report a listing, it may take several months for the problem to be addressed.

Take into consideration  the number of listings on eBay...  how many may be reported,  and then how many people sit in front of a computer and examine a listing in relation to a report....

It takes time  for a report to be addressed.

The eBay person will have to look at the listing  and then  where does the seller live in relation to what is presented in the listing.

This is not going to be easy.

Question about shipping address of seller

Does the seller live close to the Canada-US border?

and then... Can he go across the border and use Canada Post?

Or ... Does he know someone who lives in Toronto?

If someone returns something is this the Toronto address that is used?

There are many things to consider.....

--------------------------

and then... think about how to buy something from a US seller that does not ship to Canada  and does not use the Global Shipping Program (GSP)

===========================

Sellers and buyers know how to make it happen.....
