Seller requests personal information before selling to me

I recently tried to buy an item but the order was cancelled soon after by the seller because "something was wrong with the buyer's shipping address" (an issue which hasn't happened with any other seller). I tried messaging the seller about it and they said I was suspected of having a fraudulent account since I'm new and that the only way I could buy from them is if I send a selfie, proof of identification and today's date. Is this something normal on eBay or should I steer clear of this seller?

Most likely an overly paranoid seller who may (or may not) have been burnt, once, by a zero/low feedback buyer. If you can find the same item  from another seller,  do it.  Don't waste another moment fretting over that dipstick of a "seller."

Honestly, I'd report that seller to ebay. That seems like a good way to end up being the victim of identity theft.  It's definitely NOT normal. There are unfortunately sellers who will cancel sales to people with no feedback like that (although they're not really supposed to), but asking for ID is just dangerous IMO.

As others said it's most likely a paranoid seller who think low feedback profils can be scam attempts

Ironically he's the one asking for personal informations...

eBay should penalize sellers canceling with false reasons, they don't and that's something a lot of sellers exploit

Sounds like a scam to me.

I'd steer clear of the seller.

Normally when I have a problem with a buyer's address, I contact that person and ask them to clarify their address that is listed (without using photo ID).

If there are further issues, the sale gets cancelled.

Nothing should go beyond that.

And as @flipistics said, report the seller to Ebay for cancelling the sale for an invalid reason. Make sure you have the messages of what was said as proof.
